Over 50 Ice Skating Books for Your Little Ice Skater

Updated on November 11, 2012

50 Books for young readers that love ice skating!

When putting together a summer reading list for your daughter (or son, or even yourself) this year - think COOL !

Not:"Cool - that is Awesome!" But Rather: "Cool - I am glad I am out of the SUMMER HEAT!"

My daughter is a little figure skater, (pictured right here - enjoying another skating book on the day of her competition - we went to Barnes and Nobel during a break to blow some time...) ---- So, as you can guess, I have several of these ice skating books, and we both think they are great! She loves to read them over and over. We own about 20-25 ice skating books, and have checked out even more from the library. I've tried to include all the great one's that I've found here. If you know of more, do add.

There are a ton of ice skating related books out there these days. This page will feature over 50 of them to get you started or to increase your collection ! Little girls just LOVE them. Even if they are not skaters, they often dream of skating. And for the little girls that DO skate, it is usually a great interest, and books not only help fuel this interest, but they help increase the love of reading as well.

Kristi's Books

Both of Kristi Yamaguchi's books are New York Times Best Sellers. They are great stories with amazing illustrations that kids LOVE. Both have great messages for kids, too.

Kristi donates 100% of the profits from these books to various literacy programs for children through her her "Always Dream Foundation".

The illustrations are done by Tim Bowers, who did the amazing artistic work in Memoirs of a Goldfish, and Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band.

Dream Big Little Pig

"Follow your Dreams!" is the message of the great little book from Kristi "Dream Big" is the theme throughout this story that helps young kids in ice skating, and in life. A great story for any little girl (or boy) to help increase confidence and to help kids realize that nothing can hold them back if they have a goal and try their best to reach it in life.

Alphabet Learing - All About Ice Skating

A is for Axel

A is for Axel: An Ice Skating Alphabet (Sports Alphabet)
A is for Axel: An Ice Skating Alphabet (Sports Alphabet)

This goes through the Alphabet - letter by letter - with all Ice Skating related topics. The focus of this book is figure skating. It tends to appeal to the girls a bit more than the boys due to this, but there are boys in the book. Some are single skaters, and some as pairs. It is not gender bias, but most boys tend to gravitate towards the Z is for Zamboni book.

My daughter has this book and loves it. There is a lot of info in there. We started by reading just the first paragraph on each page, and then moved on to reading more as she got a little older and was more interested in the specifics of the ice skating. This way it kind of grew with her. (See comments on Z is for Zamboni about simpler version).

Z is for Zamboni

Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet (Sports Alphabet)
Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet (Sports Alphabet)

This book goes through the alphabet with all things Hockey. It is very popular with the boys - especially those that play or have interest in the game. Many girls, as well, like Hockey, and this book. A is for Axel, though, focuses on the figure skating, so if that is the interest look there. My daughter has both, and loves both.

This book (as well as A is for Axel) come in various forms. Hard Cover, Paperback, and Board Book ! The board books are significantly simpler ... Meant for very little ones. The hard cover and paperback go into much more detail on each page (few paragraphs per page) The board book, you can see below, has one sentence per page.

Great Ice Skating Related - First Reader / Easy Reader Books

Pinkalicious - Pink Around The Rink - Level 1 Easy Reader

Kaitlyn enjoys reading this one - as she LOVES everything Pink!

Pinkalicious: Pink around the Rink (I Can Read Level 1)
Pinkalicious: Pink around the Rink (I Can Read Level 1)

In this book, the little pinkalicious (known for her full line of books) gets new skates. She, of course, colors them pink before she goes out skating. She is so proud, until she ends up on the ice. On the ice she falls a few times, and the pink color runs ... all over the ice. She gets pretty embarrassed but then she realizes that she just made the rink more beautiful, and gets her footing, and has a great time on the ice :O) Fun little PINK story

Slip Slide Skate - Level 2 - Easy Reader

This is another one my daughter loves. We started with me reading it to her and now she reads it to me.

Slip! Slide! Skate!
Slip! Slide! Skate!

This book is about a little girl that goes to ice skating class. She has her mind set on being the best skater ever, that she forgets to have fun. She

stresses herself out and gets frustrated with friends that are "not trying hard enough" - and finds at the end, that it is much better to have fun when your skating, and worry a bit less about being the best.

Kate Skates - Level 1 Easy Reader

One of my daughter's very favorites!

Kate Skates (Penguin Young Readers, Level 2)
Kate Skates (Penguin Young Readers, Level 2)

In this story KATE gets new Ice Skates. New single blades - and she is so excited. She hands down the double blades to her little sister, and they go out on the ice. She gets very frustrated, because her little sister is skating better than her now ... But soon she realizes it is because she has more challenging skates herself. Her sister holds her hand and helps her out, and she soon is back on her feet. At the end she meets one of the Ice Skaters from TV and gets a quick lesson from her ... and ends up on TV herself (as a beginner). This is a great motivating story for new skaters.

Kate Skates

Chapter Books

Is your skater a little older ?

Reads by herself ?

Then you might be ready for the chapter books

Chapter Books?

These books are for the ice skater that is a little older. They are beginner chapter books -I have divided them by the YOUNGEST age likely able to read them. They will likely be enjoyed by children from that age to aprox 5 years older than that. (so the 6+ books are good for 6-11 yr olds, and the 7+ for 7-12 yr olds etc...) They are all quite a few pages, so a book mark will be needed for these kinds of books :O) Ones your skater can tote along for while she is waiting for ice time (or just everywhere else in life) They will be loved by any girl interested in ice skating, skater or not ! - I put limited info on this page - see more specifics after you click "buy" - that will just take you to Amazon - not actually have you buying it until you decide from there...

Ice Skating Related Coloring Books

Figure Skating Coloring Book

We love this book so much - we are on the 4th copy in my house ! - she finishes it out and asks for the same book again - so I get her another ... It is also not very expensive, so I don't mind ...

She is going to an ice skating camp this summer, so we got one for them too :O) (to share with friends)

Figure Skating Coloring Book (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)
Figure Skating Coloring Book (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)

Pics are not too easy and not too difficult. Fairly realistic pics - the cover is similar to the style within the book ...

Every Page - a girl, a boy, a man, a woman, Doubles, Singles, Jumps, Poses - Everything Ice Skating !

Pages are made of white paper - not newsprint type. They hold up a little better to markers - so if your daughter likes to use markers for coloring - this is great book.

Precious Moments - Skating

We had this one to. My daughter preferred the above one, but did enjoy this as well. Simple pics make it easy to color.

Friends on the Ice (Big Fun Book to Color)
Friends on the Ice (Big Fun Book to Color)

A little less realistic, but everyone loves the precious moments! - The pics are traditional Precious Moments - skating mostly in pairs, but some singles.

Pages are typical old fashion newsprint type coloring book pages. (not as great for markers, but perfect for crayons - this paper is better for crayons than the plain white paper that the above book is made of ...)

Stencil Books

Stencil Books

@LouisaDembul: Look for an indoor ice arena. Most of the time she skates inside. Outdoors is fun, but not usually ideal conditions - either too cold or not cold enough ... There may be a rink near you if you look :O) - If not, your daughters may just have to read about it ... :O)

My daughters would love to try ice skating. Unfortunately there is no ice where we live, not even snow. Next Christmas vacation I've promised them a real winter-trip, then they will finally learn ice-skating.

How delightful, didn't know about ice skating books or that Kristi Yamaguchi was a children's book author now and she would certainly know all the fun of the skating world.
