Calico Joe-a Baseball Hero

Updated on October 23, 2014

Fathers, Sons and Baseball

Every summer America enjoys its favorite pastime, Baseball. Young boys around America play baseball, talk baseball and follow all of their favorite players. Baseball is often a bonding time for fathers and sons. With the common language of the game, sons talk with their fathers about the game and perhaps enjoy a thrilling outing to a major league game.

In this delightful book by John Grisham, the author explores the relationship between fathers and sons in a page turning novel with a baseball setting.

If you are a baseball fan you can't help but get excited about the adventures of the baseball hero in the book, Calico Joe. He is having the greatest rookie year anyone has ever seen.

From the Book Jacket

"A surprising and moving novel of fathers and sons, forgiveness and redemption, set in the world of Major League Baseball."

Calico Joe - John Grisham

I thoroughly enjoyed John Grisham's latest novel set among the thrills of baseball in America. Grisham is a great storyteller and I always enjoy his legal thrillers. This time, he takes a bit of a different tact and leaves the legal world behind for the baseball world.

This novel follows the 1973 season of the Cubs and Mets, and although it has many of the actual players in the book it is still a work of fiction and the author adds many fictional players among the real ones. Fiction mixed with real people, places and events is always interesting to me, and I believe Grisham did a wonderful job in this book.

The story is told through the eyes of the son of the Mets pitcher. This boy has a complicated relationship with his father that is made more complicated by his hero worship of the rising star of the Cubs, Calico Joe.

Nothing I like better when there isn't a baseball game to watch or listen to then reading a 'book' about baseball. This is an excellent choice for any baseball fan.

I loved this book. It is about father-son relationships, human weaknesses, and forgiveness. Oh, yeah - it's also about baseball. It's a great read!

I like all of John Grisham's books, so will definitely have to read Calico Joe (me being a big baseball fan like you.) I'll bet it's right up there with his football story "Bleachers", another non-legal goodie by Grisham.

I would imagine we have several men in our family who would love to receive this book for Father's Day!

I enjoy Grisham's legal thrillers, and I also read this one by chance. Even though I'm not a baseball fan I rather enjoyed the book. Thanks for the reminder!

Nice review! I loved his book 'Painted House'. I was raised not far from where the book was set and it brought back a lot of memories from my parent's younger days and stories my Dad would tell us. This one is going on my list now! :)

Sounds like an interesting book. I don't usually read Grisham or sports but my 'boys' might like this book.
