The Birds All Left Town (short story)

Updated on June 12, 2015

"Where are all the Birds?"

Source

This was a challenge I wrote which I accepted from Availiavision which is connected to her original "Where are all the Birds?" The first photo (above) is copyright of Jeniffer Arnett.

This took me a while to write and finish and when I finally did I intended to notify Availiasvisions before I published it. I notified her that I cannot find it. I was hoping to publish it on 3-22-15. I was delaying publishing it until I heard but I am simply publishing it on 3-23-15. I have not heard anything from her. She seems to have disappearred.

It began small at one house.

The family rose and had breakfast. They went about their chores as if nothing was different. When they had lunch, they had their regular meals. When they finished the mother told them that she had a special treat which she had made for the first time. It was a new type of cake recipe which was similar to another of hers but it had a different ingredient. Instead of telling them what it was, she would let them taste it and tell her what they thought. When they tasted it they all had a questioning look on their faces.

The son, Roy, spoke up first, “My guess is that it tastes like bird seed.”

“Come on Roy”, she said, “You must have not brushed your teeth.”

“He is right honey”, the husband Harry replied, “I could not place it at first but now that he has mentioned it that is what it is.”

The daughter Linda answered next, “Yeah, that’s it.”

The wife said, “You are all crazy.” After tasting, chewing and swallowed it she screamed “No you are not! There is bird seed in my cake!!”

“What happened to your voice?” the husband asked. “It sounde different...ehh, parrot-like.”

“What do you mean parrot-like? You’re crazy.”

“You tell her Linda. You are her daughter.”

“He is right Mom.”

Then it spread to others

Roy had breakfast and hurried to school. Linda was in college so she went in later.

Roy waited two minutes for the bus. When it came he climbed on and his friend Jeff said, “Hey Roy sit next to me. I saved you a seat.”

“OK”, said Roy. “What’s new?”

“Not much. Oh, wait. Last night we had soup for supper and it tasted funny.”

“How did it taste?” asked Roy.

“That is just it”, Jeff replied, “It tasted like it had bird seed in it.”

“We had cake for dinner last night that tasted the same”, said Roy.

“That is weird”, said Jeff, “Really, really weird.”

The Rumors at School:

After Roy and Jeff arrived at school and went slowly down the halls they looked at all of the students, and then at each other, with weird faces and lead in their shoes. This was because as they did they heard most of their classmates talking about how the food tasted like ‘bird seed’ the previous night. It seems that this odd problem had spread all over the place. It was not just in Roy’s house as his family had thought.

Jeff raised his thick eyebrows and said, “Things are getting ridiculous. We have to find out why this is happening.”

Roy nodded his head of dark brown hair, “I will discuss it at my house tonight.”

“No man! I mean you and me.”

“Oh, okay, I won’t breathe a word except to you.”

The Next Day:

In school the next day as soon as Jeff saw Roy he grabbed his arm and pulled him to the side and said nervously, “It’s worse than I thought Roy.”

“What do you mean?”, said Roy with a questioning look.

“The bird shops are all shutting down ‘cause they’re sold out of all birds and seeds/foods. They have to re-stock before they can open again. Even online is sold out.”

“Gee”, thought Roy out loud, “I mean, gee.” After staring down the hallway – thinking – while frowning he told Jeff that they had to find out who is behind this and figure a way to stop it!

“You’re right. When school gets out we’ll meet at my house and see what we can come up with,” replied Jeff.

After school, back at Jeff’s:

“Let’s see. It seemed to start at your house so we’ll place the source, or head cheese, somewhere near there. The main problem: It’s making humans act like birds – I hope not turn into them. Our problem: Finding out who/what is to blame for this and when he/she/they are doing it.”

“I agree with all of that. I did not see anyone do anything – not even trying to be sneaky – at my house. I am the #1 sneak and snitch at my house”, Roy responded.

Jeff and Roy put on their thinking caps and after approximately 10 minutes a light bulb lit over Jeff, “I’ve got it!” he yelled softly.

Jeff explained, “Nothing happened when we were awake. They must have done it while we were all asleep. When this began only you, me and a few others had birds. Now everybody wants one.”

“Yep, that makes perfect sense”, remarked Roy. “Since the seeds were in the food then it must be done in the kitchen. If we go in they will not do it because we are there so we will temporarily remove the birds and place hidden cameras in there for a night. Then bring the birds back in and we can watch it on film.”

Each friend took turns sleeping over at the others house while they waited for the rest of the family to fall asleep. They were in sleeping bags in the living room at Roy's house since the stair’s creaked. When the rest of family was sound asleep, both rose and tiptoed into the kitchen and Roy took the birdcage into the other room while Jeff hid a camera. He told Roy when he was done and Roy replaced the birdcage. Then they tiptoed back to get quietly back into their sleeping bags.

The following night Roy stayed at Jeff’s house and they did the same thing. Except that Jeff handled the bird and Roy took care of the camera part. Since none of the stairs in Jeff’s house creaked at all, they slept in Jeff’s room instead of the living room. This added a little more time to their routine.

Two days later they got the tapes from each camera and watched them in Roy’s room. They could not believe what they saw. They sat in awe.

Suddenly there was a rap at the door which startled them, “Roy, supper is ready.”

“Okay, Dad. Jeff is still here. Can he stay for supper?”

“I guess so, I will have your mother set another place.”

“I didn’t realize the time being stunned with these tapes. Nobody will believe us if we tell them. What will we do?”

Jeff replied, “We'll go eat supper and decide on it later.”

What did they see in the tapes?

Hi Kevin, availiasvision must be busy at the moment. She hasn't been very active on Hub Pages recently though she did comment on my response to this challenge. This story was weird but interesting leaving me wanting to find out what the boys caught on camera.

I realized that about her too after I tried to notify her and then thought about it. Do you mean that you published yours and then she commented?

I have not decided whether I will reveal the answer or write a follow-up. We will see how many get it in the poll.

You left me hanging. I have no idea what is on the tapes. Something is ' seedy ' here. I am still lost in thought. A conspiracy, but who and why? Perhaps a neighbor?

I wrote a post on Jennifer's original "Question" where she set the challenge advising her I had written my response and she then read and commented on my hub. We shall wait and see if you decide to do a follow-up.

That was the idea Ruby. I want to see how I did in writing this. Readers were to guess their own thoughts in the poll. It looks like you gessed 'neighbor'. With enough guesses in the poll I will reveal it.

So far it is only a couple of comments John, I need more to compare results for their guesses.

consider this examiner a rollicking read.. a confusing gem.. I like how this ended.. I'm guessing past neighrbors were seen on the tape.. or perhaps nothing.. nothing at all because there was no hot surprise.. no real acknowledgement...

Gosh, Kevin, I have no clue what they caught on tape? Interesting storyline about people eating birdseed. So, they birds are all still there, but the people are just talking like birds now after eating birdseed?

I think she posted her challenge in a question, as Jodah indicated. You should check under her questions and post that you have written a response to her challenge.

You always write such interesting hubs.

      Blessings

Thank you Faith, I was planning on revealing the answer when I received enough replies but there are only a few and the traffic is dropping.

I will check her questions - and even forums - and see if she reads this and then reveal it.

Thank you for saying it was interesting.

Yes, Jennifer posted that challenge in a question. I think she's busy with film scripts and other stuff. I responded to her challenge too.

Are the birds making cakes? - out of other birds?! Can't think of anything else.

      Good story, intriguing idea.

Thank you Ann, I found Jennifer's question. I forgot that I had already responded to it. I gave up on hearing from her and published it.

Thank you for stopping by and reading it. I was not sure what to do at first so I wrote the answer in my blog:

      http://birdfeedergarden.blogspot.com/

The outcome did not turn out as well as I thought though.

      Have a nice day! :-)
