Fairy Tale Quiz

Updated on November 6, 2013

Fairy Tale Quiz - Test Your Fairytale Knowledge!

Did you know that the stories we call fairy tales started out in another form? They were originally folk tales and legends, often orally handed down from generation to generation.

French author Charles Perrault was the first person to collect and record these stories. In 1695 he published "Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals" with the subtitle "Tales of Mother Goose." He included in this collection such classics as "Sleeping Beauty," "Little Red Riding Hood," Cinderella," and "Puss in Boots."

The Brothers Grimm researched and collected folklore and published several collections of fairy tales commencing in 1812. Many of these were dark and violent tales, unlike the Disney film versions we know and love.

While the Brothers Grimm were gathering and publishing their collections, Danish author Hans Christian Andersen was working on "Eventyr" ("Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales"). His genius at writing fairy tales was not immediately recognized. As time went on, his fairy tales became known worldwide and today he is considered one of the most famous fairy tale writers of all time. His writings are not only for children but for adults as well.

The rest, as we say, is history. How well do you know your fairy tales (fairytales)? Take this Fairy Tale Quiz and find out! Have fun!

The boy who wouldn't grow up!

"Peter and Wendy, published in 1911, is the novelization by J. M. Barrie of his most famous play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up (1904). Both tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers, the fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and the pirate Captain Hook. The play and novel were both inspired by Barrie's friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family. The novel follows the play closely, but includes a final chapter not part of the original play."

This is going to sound funny, but I did great until I got to the pictures. I've heard of these stories, but not seeing the books before I didn't know who was who. Guessing most of them right though.

Almost perfect, just missed one. Oh, and by the way I love the dark tales of the Brother Grimm. I think they capture something deep in our soul that Disney misses.

I love, love, love fairy tales and myths and legends, and I enjoyed the Quiz tremendously.

I only missed a couple of questions, and that was due to linguistic gap, because I first heard the fairytales in Greek, which is my native language, and I didn't know an original title or two. E.g. in Greek, children hear about "Cat in Boots", not "Puss in Boots".

I only missed two. Another quiz question, you have listed above that Cinderella's slipper was made of glass. True for the more modern versions. But what material was used for the original slipper?
