Is anyone going to do the National Novel Writing Month this year?

This is my first time doing it this year and I'm excited but scared. Has anybody done before? If so, do you have any tips for me?

I am, and it's my first year participating. I've written novels before but they weren't good at all...this year, I've got a solid outline, and I think the deadline will force me to finish it! I also love the excitement of participating.

Second year in a row for me...though I can't honestly say I tried hard on the first go round...less than 18,000 but.... it was an eye opener...looking forward to hitting 30-50,000 this time around.

They say 1600 plus words a day.... its not an easy go. I did find that setting time aside daily for it helped, rather than try to go willy nilly with it and do 4000 for a week or whatever.

You need a comfortable place... sitting somewhere you are not only hinders the process.

Enigmatic Me: Did you post your daily work to the site for the word count in progress or wait until the end?

You can update the word count without posting it all. Better to keep some for yourself. You wouldn't want someone who thinks what you wrote was great and then for them to take it. So, update word count on your own on a daily basis...

I started in 2007 doing Nano WriMo and I must say I never got to 50K words(30k always, I don't know how) but here is some advice I do have: Visit their website often for pep talks and join up with other members. Via my blog, The Write Web, I post bits of my nano journey on there as well as tips and resources.

Here is what helped me last year and I hope it helps you:

-I begin to think about my book way before November.
-In October, I plot or outline my book and seek out advice on nanowrimo.org.
-In November I actually click away at the computer. No turning back. Even if what I write sounds funny, I keep going.
-I stay motivated by connecting with others who are on the same writing journey.

I hope this helps and I'm glad to know you will be writing this month too. Good luck!

Last year was the first NaNoWriMo I participated in and I'm proud to say I actually made it to the finish line (just barely). I'm doing it again this year and hoping I can get lightning to strike twice. The best advice I can offer is to never look back. Writing this much this fast requires constant momentum and nothing grinds you to a halt quite like editing, re-writes or doubts in general. If you think that what you wrote the previous day is crap, just accept it and move on. Build off of it and try to make what comes after even better. Heck, even if you think what you're writing at this exact moment is crap, just keep throwing it onto the page. Because, when it comes to writing, a crappy novel is better than no novel at all.
