Would you like to participate in a short story challenge?
I'm going to try something that I don't think has been done before. I'm calling all short story writers to post a Hub in response to this question.
Ready? There is an "Answer this Question" button you need to push, then push "Make a Hub About It." Then write your short story with this picture prompt.
If this works the way I think it should, all of our submissions will be in one spot and it will be easy to tell who participated. Plus, you can leave feedback for other writers right here.
Thank you for joining. You may use the picture however you wish on HP.
Sorry i am not good at words and stories but i am eager to read some short stories
Jen I have completed the challenge. My story is called "Dead Birds Everywhere" (a flash fiction story)
John, I've read your story. Great job and it definitely lends itself to a chain story. I'll give it some thought and let you know.
Thanks Chris, it was just a thought. Doesn't matter if you don't want to. It's all good.
John, I'm posting my story now. I'll include yours with mine, marking the point where I picked it up.
Thanks, Mary. John did an excellent job putting together a realistic setting. I had lots of fun writing as well.
Thanks Mary, I think it was a successful collaboration.
Jen, before agreeing, can you provide attribution for the photo?
Can we come back? I write all my hubs in Word before posting on HP. They take a lot of thought and time choosing photos. I've never tried the "write a hub" feature in these forums.
It's my photo. Use it in any way on HP. Thanks for your question.
A while back a hubber who writes wonderful poetry, had something similar. He posted the beginning of a poem he wrote and asked for endings or just a paragraph to put his poem together.
It was a brilliant way not only get to know others but to piece a beautiful piece of poetry together in such an amazing way. I was actually honored when one of my paragraphs were used.
Good luck
Laurie
I like your challenge. How many words should we include in the short story?
HP likes a minimum of 1,250 words, three photos, a video, and a poll or quiz in order for all the boxes to be ticked and giving your hub a good shot at being featured.
Thanks brave warrior, but I think 1250 words are too many words for a short story. What about just 500 0r 600 words?
It's not up to me, it's what HP requires in order for your posts to be featured, in addition to being well-written and error-free. According to Writers Digest, short stories range from 1,500 to 30,000 words. Anything below that is flash-fiction.
I see. I better make it longer. This hub is 700 + words long.
Where had all the birds in the city gone? A few pigeons but no birds. Could the little girl and little boy find them? read more
I found this via Jodah's hub. Great idea, Jennifer.
I'll try to find the time to have a go, though it might take a while so bear with me.
Good idea to put them all together.
Ann
I can't download your photo for some reason, even though it's JPEG and I should be able to; is there any other access to it other than this question, Jennifer? Thanks
Ann, right click on the photo. It will say something like "copy photo's URL." Click on that option. Then go to the photo capsule and choose "Import Photo." Paste the URL in the box, then go to the bottom and click import.
Ann, I hope you join in. It's been fun to see what's come of it. Usually you can right click and download the image. Try doing it off of one of the response hubs. If not, maybe we can somehow share private emails.
Yes, thanks to Chris I've done what he suggested and it's all fine now. I'm learning new techniques as I go! Working on the story today!
Response to a challenge within 'Questions' from Jennifer Arnett. Short story based on a picture prompt of 'DEAD BIRDS EVERYWHERE' written on a cubicle door. Why did the birds die? read more
This really sounds interesting Jennifer, where do I sign up? I did not see any other buttons while I was writing this - or anything on your profile page.
Kevin when you click the "answer this question" button at the top beneath the original question, then a "write a hub about this" button appears...you click that and write your hub in response.
In other words I simply start writing my Hub and the button appears while I am writing.
Because you have already clicked the "answer this question" button you probably can't do it again. You may just have to create a new hub as normal and put a link to this question on it.

I have seen a number of hubbers recently express an interest in more Hub Challenges being initiated, so here is one for all the aspiring (and experienced) short fiction writers.About a year ago I published a hub: http://hubpages.com/literature/Tom-Swif … r-Part-One wherein I explained...

The first part of this challenge would take place within the forum. Hubbers can vote on which entry is the best with the normal vote up, vote down system in place.Once a winner, or perhaps winners are chosen the challenge changes and becomes a contest / challenge to write the best explanation to...

Each year I attempt to get into the holiday spirit by inviting Hubbers to publish a Christmas story. No prizes, but the enjoyment of spinning a good tale is often just what is needed to appreciate what this special time is really all about.Even though it is frowned upon to normally post a...

I just read an article on the Mythic Scribes forum that was complaining how many new writers want to jump right in and write an epic novel (this IS a sci-fi/fantasy writer's forum) with no experience... suggesting maybe newbies would be better off sticking to the short story for a few years before...

I truly love the short story, and often wonder why there aren't more authors in the genre. Is it a lack of interest by the readers, or the writers, or both? Am I wrong, and why? Any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
