Girly Books - My Favorite Top 10 Chick Lit Books To Read This Summer

Updated on August 23, 2015

Girly Books Are Not Just For Teens

This my surprise you, but I'm a 29 old women, a mother and a wife and still a fan of girly books or so-called chick lit genre. If you are searching for a good book to read on a summer break, I assure you, nothing will make you laugh and relax like one of these girly books. What's more fun than a humorous story of a women caught in real life situations? No matter if she coping with a financial dept, seeking for romance, career or she's a first time mom, most of us have had a similar experience at least once in our lives so it's really easy to identify with a character.

Girly books are about women's secrets, feelings and fears - things that you would write down in your diary or share with your best friend. All that juicy stuff written in a funny tone will make you laugh at laud and think "I know what she's talking about!" or "been there, done that". If you already read a chick lit book, you will definitely want to read another one! Below is a list of my favorite girly books to read this summer - the ones I've read and loved and a couple of new books that are on my reading list.

I should mention that I also like classic literature and often read recommended books no matter what genre they are. What I love about chick lit novels? They're stress relieving and a real pleasure to read. We all need a good laugh!

The book on the photo is Crazy for you by Jennifer Crusie. According to reviews on Amazon, it's funny, exciting, sexy and romantic. I don't know about you, but I think that's exactly what makes a great summer book to read at the beach - at least for the ladies :).

My Introduction To Click Lit Books

Chick lit is a modern women's literature ("chick" - American slang for a women, "lit" - short for literature), a genre fiction that becomes popular in the late '90.

I worked in the bookstore for over five years and the biggest thing I've learned is not to judge a book until you read it. At first, I was surprised to see that chick lit titles are hitting the bestseller list soon after they've been published. Who reads this stuff? During my teen years, I was obsessed with Patrica Cornwell novels.

I've never consider to read one of these girly books until I got an assignment to write an article about bestselling chick lit books for our monthly catalog. I was curious to find out why are they so popular? What can a shiny pink cover with high heels offer to a reader? Very good explanation came from a customer "chick lit is about ordinary women dealing with everyday situations written from a humorous angle. It makes me laugh at my own problems."

She recommended that I read Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones Diary and that book was my introduction into the chick lit world. It took me 2 hours to finish it and I was totally hooked! In the next couple of days, I read the second novel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and watch the movies staring Renee Zellweger. I didn't just like it, I loved it! According to Bridget Jones, "laughing burn calories" so I bought five girly books to read on the beach. That's how I became a fan of chick lit genre - these books made my summer vacation much more fun!

Girly Books by Sophie Kinsela

Sophie Kinsela is a brilliant author of the most popular girly books and the perfect example of what you can expect of a chick lit genre. Here's a list of my top 3 favorite books.

Ultimate Chick Lit - Shopaholic Book Series

First book by Sophie Kinsela that I've read years ago, thanks to recommendation of a friend, was The Secret Dreamworld of the Shopaholic (also known as Confessions of a Shopaholic).

This fun book features a story about Rebecca Bloomwood, a young financial journalist who spends most of her time shopping. Becky can't miss a sale although her credit cards bills are getting higher by the minute and harder to ignore. Sounds familiar? Here's a Rebecca Bloomwood's quote that I liked:

"A man will never love you or treat you as well as a store. If a man doesn't fit, you can't exchange him seven days later for a gorgeous cashmere sweater. And a store always smells good. A store can awaken a lust for things you never even knew you needed. And when your fingers first grasp those shiny, new bags... oh yes... oh yes."

Oh yes! Before I even finished the first book, I wanted to read a sequel. I enjoyed all the books from the Shopaholic series so much that I can't decide which is my favorite. Becky is awesome character and you'll want to know what she's up to next.

Newest Book by Sophie Kinsela: Wedding Night: A Novel

Wedding Night: A Novel
Wedding Night: A Novel

I can't wait to get my hands on the new book by Sophie Kinsela. Amazon has released Wedding Night: A Novel on April 23, 2013 at discounted price. Sophie Kinsela is one of my favorite chick lit authors and I believe that this book is just as fabulous like all the others.

Definitely on my shopping list for the summer!

Chick Lit Book Club ... With A Cocktail!

In summer 2008 I've organized a private chick lit book club with few of my friends. We would pick 3 or 4 books to read and get together at the end of the summer to talk about which book we've liked the most. Our book club meeting always ended with a cocktail and a girls night out. Did you just got an idea to spice up your summer? I got a few! How about chick lit book night or chick lit pajama party? Girly books are a great theme for a party!

Chick Lit Books For Modern Moms

The era of drinking cocktails more often than coffee may be over, but I still love a good girly book. Now that I've met and married my handsome hubby and had kids, I'm in the mood for reading chick lit books with funny approach to motherhood. As you may noticed, I love to identify with a main character and these girly books for moms are just what I want to read. I refuse to believe that chick lit genre is reserved for single ladies. Are you with me?

Wine In My Sippy Cup? Yes, please!

Wine in my Sippy Cup (catchy title, isn't it?) by Deborah Dove is among high rated chick lit books on Amazon. It's a story about young mother who is trying to balance her life between kids and career. Liz is also doing the best she can to spice up her marriage. How many of you ladies have been in her shoes? Sounds like a good read!

Deborah Dove : Wine in my Sippy Cup

Will Write for Shoes : How To Write A Chick Lit Novel

Will I write for shoes? Hell, yes! I'll write for anything. If there are shoes involved, count me in!

When I was a teen girl, I believed that I will write a novel someday. That didn't happened. Yet.

While I was researching information about top chick lit novels for this article, I stumbled across this book that caught my attention. A brilliant idea crossed my mind (that happens a lot lately, must be a bug or something). I thought, could I write a chick lit book? If I had some guidelines for making a successful chick lit novel that will become a bestseller, I would go for it! Cathy Yardley makes it a lot easier. Will Write for Shoes: How to Write a Chick Lit Novel is a humorous book that covers everything you need to know if you're interested in writing Chick Lit. Amazon feedback from customers who purchased the book are pretty good. Price is not bad either.

Plus, I really like the cover. Good enough for me.

Girly Books On The Big Screen - Movies based on popular Chick Lit novels

Can you recommend a great chick lit book for me to read this summer? I would like to expand my reading list. If I don't make it trough summer, never mind. I love to read on rainy days, too.

If you personally don't like or even hate girly books, please don't leave rude comments. I hope this page was helpful for those who love chick lit as much as I do. Have a nice day and enjoy your summer vacation with a good novel, no matter what genre is it.

Do you read girly books? - I would love to hear from you!

I'll occasionally dabble in chick lit, especially as a beach or vacation read. Wish I could remember the author of a series I read last summer...or even the titles of the books. Fun reads all, but the titles are just not coming to me at the moment. I'll have to try out some of your suggestions for my next vacation.

I adore novels by Jennifer Crusie and Sophie Kinsella - they're such a hoot! I also enjoy books by Nora Roberts, Stephanie Laurens, Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Rhys Bowen, Robyn Carr, Molly Harper and, of course, the incomparable Janet Evanovich. I guess it's time for me to write a lens about my favorite chick lit authors, too! Thanks so much for sharing yours. :)
