Gothic Author : H. P. Lovecraft

Updated on May 7, 2014

Weird Tales by Howard Phillips Lovecraft

When people hear the term "Gothic Literature" most will think only of Edgar Allen Poe. But there was another who even though he too was a fan of Poe, is equal to him in literary standing. Lovecraft was a master craftsman of the written word. He wrote not just fiction, but horror, science fiction, fantasy, and even his own style which people have labeled "weird fiction". Like his idol, Poe, Lovecraft has influenced contemporary horror writers, such as Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Clive Barker just to name a few. His creation the Necronomicon was the inspiration for the Evil Dead franchise.

I created this lens to share with you the wonderous works of Lovecraft. I hope that they will inspire you as much as they have me.

Selections of Lovecraft's Works

I want to mention a few of Lovecraft's more famous stories, and briefly tell you what they are about.

The Call of Cthulu - Cults of the Dark Elder Gods try to raise Cthulu to bring the end of our world and the beginning of thiers.

The Shunned House - A lone house has a secret. It's basement is the source of a vampiric presence that sucks the life out of whom ever lives there.

The Outsider - One man is confined to an area, and he cannot recall who he is or where he is, and how he got there. In the end he discovers that he is one of the undead.

Cool Air - A strange physician resides in a boarding house. He lives in a very cold room that is controlled to maintain a certain temperature. Another resident befriends him to discover just why he has his rooms so cold, and what he was trying to preserve.

The Colour Out of Space - A meteor crashes in a rural area, and soon after people are dissapearing. The land is blighted, and animals seem to be gone. What has happened?

The Dunwich Horror - A small seaside town hides a very dark, and creepy secret. Other towns are leery of them, and they seem to keep to themselves, but are strangly prosperous. Why are they cut off from the rest of the world?

At the Mountains of Madness - An exploration to the Antarctic leads to a discovery that may never be explained to the rest of the world. Just what was living there, and are they still there?

These are just a small sampling of the many tales that Lovecraft had written over his career as a writer. I hope that you will get the chance to read these, and discover just how good these classic stories are.

Lovecraft & The Dark Elder Gods - Cthulu Rising!

Lovecraft created original backstories to a few of his short stories. Some of these involve Cthulu, and the Dark Elder Gods who are said to dwell under the seas until they are summoned forth by thier cult to "cleanse" the world. He even invented a "bible" for his Gods, called the necronomicon. These were totally an invention of a writer with a very good imagination or are they real?

Are Cthulu and the Dark Elders real?

I have read several books of Lovecraft. When I was in 'horror era', he used to be in the 'big three' group with Barker and King. He is the most Gothic of all, at least the stories I have read then.
