10 Great Books for Men and Guys

Updated on February 26, 2013

Ten Great Books for Men and Guys

For guys who can't find something to read, you've been looking in the wrong place.

For girlfriends whose presents for their men go unread, you've been giving him the wrong books. Giving him what he should like, instead of what he will like.

Men love to read great books. But great books for men are hard to find.

Men like books that are exciting and uplifting and heroic.

We don't like books about sniveling real estate agents In New Jersey.

If you are looking for great books for men and guys, you are in the right place. And now I written a few of my own: Redwood to Deadwood, a 54-year old dude hitchhikes across America. Again. And, White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence and How the Media Ignore it.

So enjoy:

Colin Flaherty

p.s. These books are also great in audio after you read them. I just finished listening to Shogun and Lonesome Dove. Great stuff for a hike!

Great Books for Men - The latest book from Colin Flaherty

books guys will enjoy.

The Kill Artist
The Kill Artist

He's a great art restorer, and great assassin for the Mossad. Literate and educational and pot boiling all at the same time. A three-fer!

Redwood to Deadwood: Hitchhiking America Today.
Redwood to Deadwood: Hitchhiking America Today.

The 53-year old dude hitchhikes across America. Again. That dude would be me.

"Before I tucked my thumb in for the final time, I'd almost get murdered, run with wild horses, visit a pot plantation, get into crazy family feuds with my own and other families, restart my business, ride in cop cars, hunt big game, poach big game, get chased by a helicopter, reconnect with old friends, make new ones, get tired and exhilarated and lost and found and scorned and accepted, kicked out and invited in.

That and a lot more. I now know how to cook muskrat, squirrel and rockchuks."

Hitchhiking stories along with rules of the road for those thinking about taking their own adventure.

If you do not like this book, you are either 1) Oprah Winfrey 2) dead. So get going. You will never forget it.

Get to Gary Jennings and his other great books for men.

John Irving. Not on this list of great books for men and guys. Sorry John.
John Irving. Not on this list of great books for men and guys. Sorry John.

Great Books for Men and Guys. Not.

My friend Fred loves to read. But he always falls asleep two or three pages into his book.

"So what are you reading?" I asked.

"100 Years of Solitude," quoth he.

No wonder. For years, book reviewers and academics have been trying to convince us that lousy books are great, great books are lousy, and so my friend Fred ends up falling asleep reading boring and non-sensical books.

I looked up a few great books for men lists, and at the top of the Esquire list is Invisible Man. And don't forget Oprah's list: http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/Books-That-Make-Gre...

She includes the obligatory One Hundred Years of Solitude. And for those who do not read Spanish, not to worry. The book is only marginally more comprehensible in English.

Whew. Deep breath.

Repeat: There is no chance -- NO CHANCE -- that you will find a great book for men in the boxes where your wife stores the books from her college lit courses. No matter what she says.

And yes, that includes John Irving.

So for Fred's sake, read a great book for men.

Back to Great Books for Men and Guys

Here are five more great books for men and guys.

Shogun (Asian Saga)

You will just look stupid.

Put this on the list although the author is ornery enough to say this book isn't for guys.

My Losing Season: A Memoir

Warning: Pat Conroy writes books that women rave about. That doesn't necessarily make him a lousy writer. And this is proof of that.

And while you are at it, read Prince of Tides. The Ultimate Chick Book for Guys.

Though Amy Tan has a few as well.

Can't beat that combo. So here are a few.

First, our instructor has a cook book on picking your domain names ... it is not on amazon, so get it at jimkurkral.com

Books to avoid at all costs: Go to Google. Enter, great books for men. Do not give any book on any of the lists such as Esquire, GQ, and others. Not if you want your boyfriend to stay awake while he reads them.

New Daniel Silva book coming out in July! Something about Rembrandt. I'll be there.

I like a good cheese steak with a good book.

My friend just left a message on my Facebook, saying she liked my Bernard Cornwell recommendations but did not care for the Danielle Steele book I was reading and recommended.

Which is strange since I am not a Danielle Steele reader. I think it was a joke, but I am worried it was not.

This person is either mentally ill; or trying to make a joke.

I just paused for ten seconds ... I did not hear anyone laughing.

My Chinese Doctor says meat hurts memory. Jokesters and meat products do not mix.

Just saw where Patrick Robinson's new book is out soon. After reading his facebook page, i learned how his experience ghost writing Lone Survivor changed him and his books. Very interesting.

xxx

For guys who can't find something to read, you've been looking in the wrong place.

For girlfriends whose presents for their men go unread, you've been giving him the wrong books. Like Homer giving Marge a bowling ball with the initials HJS on it for their anniversary, you've been giving your boyfriend books he should like.

Instead of what he will like.

Great Book Blog.

@sybil watson: Hi sybil, have you ever met anyone who was excited about that book? Anyone not on Prozac or not in state custody for being a danger to themselves or others? I have not. As to General Powell, I am not a fan of the gentleman ever since the Scooter Libby affair.

I'm relieved that someone else couldn't get through "One Hundred Years of Solitude"! How about "My American Journey" by Colin Powell? It has a lot of manly man stuff in it, but I really enjoyed his eyewitness view of history.

Anything by John D. MacDonald. Especially the Travis McGee series.

I think by fardest the two best books ive ever read were ( the maintnace man and kiss the girls ) i know theres a movie out their from the book kiss the girls but is nothing like the book although Morgan Freeman did play a good role in that movie

100 Years of Solitude and Invisible Man are both phenomenal books. What's with the assumption that the only way you can get a man to read is with violence stories , catering to short attention spans, or assuaging his mid life crisis?

Another great book for men: "The Corruption of Michael Levitt." Guy pals are raving about it.

Another excellent read for men is "Whatever Sticks Most" by Darren Hogarth

@Gendhis LM: Sorry about this: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is not just a chick book, it is a liberal chick book. How else would you characterize a series where a lesbian and a reporter driving a Prius team up to defeat a bunch of Nazis?

    • profile image

      anonymous 5 years ago

@anonymous: Manlybooks is terrible and pretty much empty in recommendations. The author of this list has only 2 decently good books recommended and the rest are completely random or self written. By the way Tom Clancy books are so incredibly dumb I want to rip my eyes out.

I just finished Colin's book White Girl Bleed A Lot. I found it on www.whitegirlbleedalot.com It was such an insightful book! I highly recommend it, in fact so much so that I might write a review on it.

@anonymous: I'll put this is as gently as I can: If Tom Clancy were a much better writer, he would be Patrick Robinson. Robinson has written several books set in submaries, Oval Offices, Kremlins, whatever ...that are very compelling and fun to read. I have at least one or two listed above.

@anonymous: Robert Ludlum- always a classic.

Vince Flynn is a huge up-and-comer now.

James Rollins Sigma Series is also popular.

Those three authors will give you more than enough books to satisfy the Tom Clancy urge.

Also, iUMBC.com has a ton of suggestions.

Finally, someone who agrees. Any book list you find has completely unreadable books just to make the author look smart. Am I really going to read Plato's The Republic or Darwin's Origin of Species.

      Nope.

Some good books here. Too many book editors are women who filter out books men will like because they think they are "inappropriate". Well sorry, some of us guys are not so worried about being appropriate. One recently published book for men is Flaming Cows, Watermelon Love, and Blackbird Stew:a Southern Tale (available on Amazon for kindle). This book tells some hilarious stories about such things as, uhem, making love to chickens and watermelons, as well as funny hunting stories, dirt clod wars, and hunting blackbirds with dynamite. Fortunately there are a few good books for men still published.

      - The Road by Cormac McArthy
