Green Eggs And Ham By Dr Seuss
Green Eggs And Ham; Will You Try Them Here Or There?
Green Eggs and Ham is one of Dr Seuss's most enjoyable and amusing books, with a clear message to unadventurous children and adults alike.
This is the tale of two protagonists; one offering the experience of a meal of Green Eggs and Ham and another who is set in his ways and reluctant to try the new food. Green Eggs and Ham are solicited in a variety of ways until eventually the meal is consumed.
With wonderfully strange situations in which to try the bizarre meal of Green Eggs and Ham, superb rhyming text and the surreal illustrations that are a trademark of Dr Seuss, this is a brilliant book that remains one of my favorites over 30 years after first having it read to me by my parents.
In this lens I will introduce you to the story, the main characters and themes as well as providing some video clips of Green Eggs and Ham and some related products.

Meet Sam-I-Am - The Pusher Of Green Eggs And Ham
Sam-I-am has often been compared to a telemarketer and the lengths to which he stretches do indeed lend some strength to this allegory. By constantly changing his marketing strategy from the original "try them here or there" to increasingly bizarre situations, including "try them, try them in a tree, try them, try them and you will see", Sam-I-am eventually wears down his "victim" who does indeed try Green Eggs and Ham in the final pages.
Sam-I-Am is truly one of Dr Seuss's most memorable and influential characters.

The Nameless Sceptic - Eventually He Tries Green Eggs & Ham
At the beginning of this book, the Nameless Sceptic is quietly relaxing, minding his own business when he is suddenly interrupted by Sam-I-am racing past with his legendary plate of food. For the remainder of the book the Sceptic is transported from boxes, to houses, to cars, to trains in an attempt to find a situation in which he is prepared to try Green Eggs and Ham.
This character doggedly refuses to try them saying, "I do not like Green Eggs and Ham, I do not like them Sam-I-am". However, such is the persistence of Sam-I-am that the sceptic eventually agrees to try them if Sam will leave him in peace.
If you try something, you may see, just like the Nameless Sceptic, that you will enjoy something new.

In a Box? With A Fox? - The Silly Situations In Which To Try Green Eggs And Ham
A lot of the fun of Dr Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham is derived from the silly situations that Sam-I-Am thinks up in which to try the magnificent meal. Whilst these situations start off fairly mundane with "here" or "there" they quickly slip into the surreal with the temptation to try the food in a box or with a fox, in a house or with a mouse.
However, as a child I really loved it when Sam-I-Am whisks the Sceptic away in a car and quickly rushes him into a variety of daft situations in which to eat Green Eggs and Ham with a goat popping its head out of a special compartment in the car and crashing into a moving train.
These silly situations are definitely an important reason for the success of this book and make the delivery of its message fun for children.
The Illustrations - Dr Seuss's Fantastically Surreal Cartoons
Whilst Dr Seuss's rhyming text makes for a wonderful story and describes quite bizarre situations, the contribution the illustrations make to this book cannot be overemphasized.
With Dr Seuss's odd cat-like figures painted in an array of eye-catching and surreal colors, the artwork in Green Eggs and Ham makes purchasing this book worthwhile even without the memorable story that goes with them. In fact for those who are the biggest fans of Green Eggs and Ham could buy several copies of the book and take them apart in order to frame every illustration.
One of the things I like most about the illustrations in this book are the funny expressions on the faces of the "people" and animals that get involved in the tale. I particularly like the expectant looks they all have when they are waiting for the Sceptic to finally try the green eggs and ham.
Green Eggs and Ham is truly one of the best children's books available, in my opinion, and I was delighted to find that there is a whole load of Green Eggs and Ham stuff for sale on Amazon.com and eBay.

Dr Seuss's Green Eggs And Ham Uses Only Fifty Words
Green Eggs and Ham was written by Dr Seuss using only fifty words after his publisher had made a bet with him that he could not write a book using only this small number of words. It would seem that Dr Seuss won $50 for succeeding in this task. Surely green, ham, and, eggs are the most frequently used?
Here are the fifty words that are used:
a am and anywhere are be boat box car could dark do
eat eggs fox goat good green ham here house I if in let
like may me mouse not on or rain Sam say see so thank
that the them there they train tree try will with would you

I cannot remember when I had my first Dr Seuss book read to me by my parents as I was too young, but I can remember enjoying Green Eggs and Ham, The Sneetches, Hop On Pop and Horton Hatches The Egg over and over again as a young reader. As well as being great fun and having an amazing visual impact Dr Seuss stories have a message behind them; these things have all gone towards making the popularity of Dr Seuss's world such that there are still vibrant sales of his books and a huge range of products carrying his characters.
