How to write a love letter

Updated on November 4, 2014

It's not as hard as it sounds!

Every woman loves getting love letters. The problem is that a lot of men don't know how to write them. They either have so much to say that it comes out in a jumbled mess, or they can't think of anything to say. With this step by step guide, you'll learn how to write a love letter. I've included ideas on what to write and how to pick the perfect stationery.

Have you ever..

What should you write in a love letter?

Just because it's a love letter doesn't mean it has to mushy or poetic. The only requirements for a love letter are that you're honest and you write from the heart. If you're drawing a blank on what to say, here are some good ideas:

  • Describe a "first".

The very first time you saw her.

The very first time you heard her laugh.

    Your first conversation.

    Example:

Do you remember the first time we met? I'm not talking about when I introduced myself and asked you out for coffee. We actually met two weeks before that.

I was at the library dropping off some books. You were standing on the steps looking at something in the distance. My first thought was that I couldn't believe how beautiful you were. My second was that I had to meet you. So, with a little quick thinking, I took advantage of your being distracted and bumped right into you. But then the minute you said you were sorry, my mind went blank. You helped me pick up my books, but then you walked away before I could say a word. You may not know this, but I went to the library everyday for two weeks hoping to bump into you again. And when you finally showed up, I was able to introduce myself and ask you out.

  • Tell her about when you realized she was "the one"

Was there a certain moment when you just knew?

    Example:

The realization that you were the one for me was sudden. It was just after you had met my family. You came over to my apartment with a puzzle book for my niece because you heard someone say she enjoyed them. I couldn't believe you had remembered something so small. When I saw that puzzle book in your hands, I knew you were the one I wanted to be with for the rest of my life. Of course, I didn't let you in on that secret for a few months.

  • Tell her what makes her different from other women

    Example:

You sometimes ask me why I love you so much. Why you and not someone else? I've never really known how to answer that because it's not just one thing that set sets you apart. It's so many little things that, together, make you an amazing woman. Your confidence in yourself, the way you always think of others first, your slightly competitive nature, and the fact that you love me for me are just a few of the things that make you my perfect woman.

  • Write the one thing you love most about your life together

    Example:

Do you know what I look forward to every single day? Coming home from work. Because I know that when you hear me come through the front door, you're going to drop whatever you're doing and rush to give me a hug and a kiss. You really know how to make me feel loved.

  • Talk about your future together

Any part of the future, whether it be tonight or 40 years from now.

    Example:

Have I ever told you my favorite fantasy? It's us, 30 years from now. We're sitting on our wooden swing on the front porch. What hair I have left is thin and gray. My face and hands are lined with wrinkles. I look at you, just as wrinkled and gray, and think to myself that you're still the most beautiful woman in the world. I see our hands, our wrinkled fingers intertwined, and I know I'm lucky to have spent my life with you.

Now put it all together

Now that you have all your little pieces written, it's time to put them together. You might have to change a few words to make it sound seamless, but try to keep the basics of what you've already written.

For my love, Her Name

You may not know this, but I went to the library everyday for two weeks hoping to bump into you again. And when you finally showed up, I was able to introduce myself and ask you out.

It didn't take me long to realize that you were it, the 'one', my perfect match.

All my love,

now and forever,

What kind of paper do you use for a love letter?

A perfect love letter should be written on beautiful stationery depicting flowers, hearts or fluffy animals. However, let's be honest. Any love note written from the heart will make her melt. Write it on a napkin. Write it on notebook paper. Write it on the back of a receipt (on second thought, skip the receipt). Or, you could meet in the middle and use parchment paper.
