If You Give A Book Series Began With If You Give A Mouse A Cookie..

Extremely popular with the under five crowd is the series "If You Give A" by Laura Numeroff. The first book, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, has been a huge success for many years but you might be interested to know that, according to the Los Angeles Times, it was rejected a total of NINE times before Harper Collins agreed to publish it.

Thank goodness Harper Collins did decide to publish it because If You Give A Mouse A Cookie was so popular that Numeroff wrote many more featuring the now well-known and well-loved mouse, moose, cat and pig characters.

The books in this series all employ a circular format or a chain of events without a definite end, which could go on endlessly. Children love finding themselves back at the beginning again and adults enjoy seeing actions typical of children unfold in the stories as the demands from the characters continue to grow. On this page, you will learn a bit more about this much-loved book series If You Give A... and about Laura Numeroff herself.

The If You Give series is recommended for children up to eight-years old but, like all great children's literature, is also enjoyed by older children and by adults.

If You Give A Pig A Pancake

Published in 1998, If You Give A Pig A Pancake is a book which features the doings of a cute little pig who creates a lot of work as she goes. If you are familiar with this series, you can guess the storyline -- give a pig a pancake and she'll want some maple syrup. Give her some maple syrup and she'll get sticky -- and so on, all the way around to the pancake again.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"This is a book for children of all ages, not just 4-8. I have 3 children, the youngest of which is 16 months old. All three love it. The pictures are adorable (especially the pig) and the story is typical of children's thoughts (flying from one thing to the next). My 8 year old likes to read it to the baby and laughs with the story which makes the baby laugh. If you liked the "If you give a mouse a cookie..." book, you will love this one also." ~ Kimberly R. Myers

If You Give A Cat A Cupcake

Published in 2008 and planned, no doubt, to take advantage of our love affair with cupcakes, this book features zany adventures with a gray kitten. Yes, this is the cat from If You Give a Pig a Party and yes, you can once again guess the storyline for if you give a cat a cupcake, he'll want sprinkles, he'll make a mess, he'll get hot and so on. Definitely one of my favorites because of the cupcake connection!

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"My 6 year old daughter loves this series. I didn't expect much that we hadn't seen before, but the cat and cupcake were clever and cute as can be." ~ W. Larson

If You Take A Mouse to the Movies

This 2009 release, If You Take A Mouse To The Movies, is a gorgeous Christmas version of the story of the same name, which includes not only the story but also recipes, sheet music, games, a CD and more. This may be one of the best books in the If You Give A series, particularly for Christmas time gift giving. In this story, the mouse is going to the movies but you can guess only too easily what will happen...of course he's going to need popcorn. However, the adventure is much bigger than a simple trip to the movies. Adults will recognize and love the enthusiasms of a child; children, the circle of events which take you right back to where you began.

Included in this book are four of the books: If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, If You Give A Moose A Muffin and If You Take A Mouse To School plus some songs, activities and recipes. A CD reads along with the stories and also sings the songs. Amazon customer Angie says her daughter loves this series. She says that the stories are easy to follow and, of course, that the pictures are great. She is happy to “highly recommend this series for beginning readers."

Wow, am I out of touch. I loved "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie", but didn't realize there was a whole series.
