10 Inspirational Quotes about Beautiful Clouds!
My Favorite Quotes about Clouds
Clouds are a great metaphor in literature and poetry. This is a collection of 10 inspirational quotes featuring clouds that can symbolise both the negative and the positive - misery, life's obstacles and aspirations, unveiling of answers, hope, dreaming and love.
How can clouds mean so many different things to people? I think it is because they constantly change and move, they can look beautiful and benign or ominous and angry - looking up at the sky, we can impose our own feelings on to them. In literature this is called "pathetic fallacy", where the clouds come to emphasize our emotional states. So without further ado...lets get on to my favorite inspirational cloud quotes!
Cloud Quote 1 - Hope
"Sometimes I go about pitying myself, and all the while I am being carried across the sky by beautiful clouds"
This proverb is from a poem told by the Ojibwe tribe of Native Americans, the 4th largest in America and the 3rd largest in Canada. I think this quote means that life may get you down, you feel sorry for yourself, but ultimately life does go on regardless.
Cloud Quote 2 - Know your potential
"A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such a speed, it feels an impulsion... .this is the place to go now. But the sky knows the reason and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond horizons."
This quote is by the American writer Richard Bach who was born in 1936 and is best known for his best selling novel "Jonathan Livingston Seagull". I think the meaning of this is that you will know your potential if you believe in your abilities - to lift yourself high.
Cloud Quote 3 - Being Close to Nature
Henry Thoreau (1816 - 1862) was an American author and poet, but also wore many other hats - abolitionist, naturalist, philosopher, historian, transcendentalist, the list goes on! Thoreau believed in what he called the "tonic of wildness", by being attuned to nature around us and that is what this quote is all about; being aware of the natural world.
Cloud Quote 4 - Overcoming Adversity
"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941) is a Bengali poet, novelist, musician and painter. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Clouds here are a metaphor for life events, some may be bad or good but Tagore believes that they all add color and interest to his life.
Cloud Quote 5 - Self Awareness
"As long as anyone believes that his ideal and purpose is outside him, that it is above the clouds, in the past or in the future, he will go outside himself and seek fulfillment where it cannot be found. He will look for solutions and answers at every point except where they can be found - in himself."
Erich Fromm (1900 - 1980) was a German psychologist, philosopher and socialist. Fromm is saying here that by looking for solutions to problems within yourself is a better way to find fulfillment, rather that searching "above the clouds".
Cloud Quote 6 - Dreaming
"That, if then I had waked after a long sleep, will make me sleep again; and then, in dreaming, the clouds me thought would open and show riches ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked I cried to dream again."
This was written by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) in The Tempest, Act 3, Scene 2. This is part of a powerful speech by Caliban, an ambiguous character that is part monster and part human.
Cloud Quote 7 - True Love
"True love is night jasmine, a diamond in darkness, the heartbeat no cardiologist has ever heard. It is the most common of miracles, fashioned of fleecy clouds, a handful of stars tossed into the night sky."
Jim Bishop (1907-1987) was an American journalist and writer. This quote uses the beauty of fleecy clouds to describe the wonder of falling in true love.
Cloud Quote 8 - Life's Journey
"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds."
Edward Abbey (1927 - 1989) was an American author passionate about Environmental issues. This quote means that the journey may be hard, but it will all be worthwhile when you push up past the clouds and see the view.
Cloud Quote 9 - Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty?
"A pessimist sees only the dark side of the clouds, and mopes; a philosopher sees both sides, and shrugs; an optimist doesn't see the clouds at all - he's walking on them.
Leonard Louis Levinson (1904 - 1974) an author who wrote a diverse range of books from the Left Handed Dictionary to the International Fondue Cook Book! Here, he uses different types of clouds to illustrate people's personalities.
Cloud Quote 10 - Hope
J K Rowling is an English author best known for her Harry Potter series, this quote can be read in Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban.
