John McAfee's Last Stand by Joshua Davis

Updated on January 14, 2013

John McAfee - Genius or Psychotic?

On November 12, 2012, John McAfee - who developed the McAfee anti-virus software, was accused of killing his neighbor in Belize. He has claimed his innocence to the media and allowed a journalist from Wired Magazine - Joshua Davis - to interview him and write a book about him.

When I read this book, I was astounded as to his genius and his ability to sell himself and his ideas. He sold his company in 2010 for $7.68 billion. In his early years, he was an addict and drank heavily. He took LSD once and felt his mind shatter. After that, cleaned him up, became clean and sober and turned to yoga.

After the stock market crash in 2008-2009, he lost millions of dollars. He seemed to have had a meltdown and became paranoid and mentally unstable. He sold many of his assets and moved to Belize in Central America. He became involved with criminals and prostitutes. Scared of being killed, he bought a compound, started building on it, had relationships with many underage girls, hired thugs and police to protect him and his property, and eventually started carrying guns with him.

How an Obscure Comic Artist Became John McAfee's Lifeline to the World

An article by Aaron Colter - also from Wired - discusses the relationship between John McAfee and Chad Essley, an animator from Portland. Chad was hired by John McAfee to become the webmaster for his blog (Who Is McAfee - see big arrow above) and his personal liaison to the public.

Chad Essley visited John McAfee in Belize last summer. John McAfee asked him to document his life in a graphic novel. It is called The Hinterland.

When he called Chad recently, John McAfee said "We’re fine. Things have calmed down. Time to come to Belize. Moneypenny will arrange the details.’”

How's that for straight out of James Bond!!!!
