Good Lesbian Fantasy Novels

Updated on May 7, 2014

Love reading fantasy but wish there were more lesbians?

Are you a fan of classic fantasy books, from magery to dragons to sword swinging knights? Do you wish there were more magical lesbian books? Well, there are! And they aren't all urban fantasy stories, either - not that there's anything wrong with yet another werewolf/vampire romance, but there's nothing quite like 'high' and sword and sorcery fantasy, which is the kind we've concentrated on here.

So we've put together a list of the best written and most generally awesome fantasy books. Sure, not as many as we'd like, but there are enough good ones to get you started and more new lesbian books in all genres, including fantasy, are being published every day.

You can find reviews for most of the books listed under the fantasy tag at Good Lesbian Books.

Lesbian Fantasy Anthologies & Short Stories - Awesome anthologies worth picking up!

While novel length books are great, sometimes you just want a quick read to dip into. Or you simply can't pass by an amazing author. There are a handful of amazing fantasy anthologies that feature lesbians out there, and they are well worth reading.

For individual short story recommendations, see below the anthologies.

Lythande (Daw science fiction)
Lythande (Daw science fiction)

Written by one of the major authors in mainstream fantasy, Lythande is a mysterious lesbian mage who travels her world on assorted adventures, keeping her gender secret and killing time until the end of the world.

There are several later stories also available as individual eBooks, but this anthology collects the first few stories which aren't all available elsewhere.

A Day at the Inn, A Night at the Palace and Other Stories
A Day at the Inn, A Night at the Palace and Other Stories

A delightfully entertaining collection of stories from Catherine Lundoff, ranging from urban fantasy to science fiction. While there are quite a few historical stories, they are mostly of the romantic, sword swinging and alternate history type and should fit right in with most fantasy readers' tastes.

Sleeping Beauty, Indeed & Other Lesbian Fairytales
Sleeping Beauty, Indeed & Other Lesbian Fairytales

A collection of retold fairy tales from various authors.

While they range in quality, the majority of the stories in this book are well worth reading and there are some absolute gems in here.

Bending the Landscape: Fantasy
Bending the Landscape: Fantasy

Half lesbian, half gay men, this is a fantastic collection of fantasy stories featuring queer characters. However, a lot of the stories are veering into science fiction territory, and the science fiction volume is better (because it is amazing).

Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins
Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins

A series of very short, first person retellings of many different fairy tales, all threaded together in a connected narrative. Each story is told by a female character, and several of them are - or could easily be - lesbian.

The Witch Sea
The Witch Sea

A magical and powerful short story from a new, yet prolific and delightful, author. In this story, a lonely guardian is locked in a lonely stand off with the sea god and his creatures she keeps trapped on land.

Stealing Magic
Stealing Magic

Half the stories are about the lesbian thief, Terizan, in a fantasy city, and her adventures - including meeting her lover, the mercenary called Swan.

Daughters of Artemis
Daughters of Artemis

A werewolf themed anthology, ranging from terrible to fantastic. Mostly modern settings, but at least a couple of pure fantasy stories.

I wrote a book and I have 3 homosexual characters and one which is bisexual and they all play crucial roles in the story (one of them is one of the main characters), but I am not here to advertise my work. Very cool lens :) I will surely check some of these books out.

In my hurry to describe the darned book, I forgot to mention the name. WINDOWS: A BROKEN FAIRY TALE is the title, and it's the first in a planned four to five part series.

I just published my first novel on Amazon for the kindle. Quick summary is a blacksmith,Sarah, and a sorceress, Raven, fall in love.

If that were all, it'd be a very boring book. In order to spice things up, I added a small problem for the sorceress. An ancient demon trapped within her soul, waiting for chance to escape. Eventually it does, and a simple blacksmith is forced to save the world.

I can't say it's great literature because I wrote it, but it is a lesbian fantasy novel so I thought y'all might be interested.
