Master of Horror : Joe Hill
New Author of Terror
If you have yet to read or hear about this author I will now give you an introduction to one of the latest up and coming writers of horror. Eldest son of Stephen King, and real name, Joseph Hillstrom King. He has written a number of short stories, and some with his father. He also has a number of novels under his belt. This is my tribute/fanpage what have you, and just my way of convincing you the reader why you should be reading his books.
My introduction to the writings of Joe Hill
Being a member of an awesome online book community means hearing about the latest trends in the book world. I had heard a little about this author, as his book "Horns" was tending in the booktube community. "Horns" has been made into a film starring Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe in the main role. But I did not know that he was the son of famed horror author, Stephen King until much later. Being the son of a well known horror master he has so much to live up to, and I can see why he chose to write under a pen name, so that he can get the recognition for his work, and not for who he is the progeny of. So I was browsing my local used book store, and happened to come across a paperback copy of his first novel, "Heart Shaped Box"(Please see video below of my review of this book).
This was my first book ever by this author, and I have to say that I was very impressed by the macabre writing that I had not seen in a very long time. I did some research, as I wanted to learn more about this author, and being a comic book fan I had heard his name before. I soon discovered that he was the son of Stephen King, and found his writing to be even darker than his father's classic writing style. This first novel was not just a ghost story but also a karmic journey of a man who needed to change his life in order to save his life.
Since having read his first novel I have picked up his other books, and they are on my to be read list. I have read his latest which is a fantasy/thriller with a supernatural twist of the Christmas holiday. NOS4RA2 has to be one of his longest novels to date, and it utilizes the illustrative talent of his comic book collaborator, Gabriel Rodriguez. Yet another novel that will keep you in suspense, and wanting more. You will never think of Christmas the same after reading this one.
Joe Hill on Amazon
His latest. Fantasy/thriller supernatural novel. You will never think of Christmas the same after reading this.
Hill's first published novel, and one of his best in my opinion. Story of a rock n roller who is haunted by much more than a ghost. He must make some changes to attone for what he has done.
This is the novel that has been made into a film starring Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe. A young man grows horns over night....what is going on???
First Printed work, and his collection of short stories.
Comic Book Writer?
Not many writers will branch out into writing for comic books, but Joe Hill does with his series Locke & Key. Of course a few other writers have tried their hand at comics, such as his father Stephen King, and Clive Barker just to name a few. But Hill has such a talent with suspense writing that he has found a way of getting people who do not usually read graphic novels to read this supernatural fantasy series.
The premise of the story is of the Locke family after having lost the head of said family in a brutal murder they decide to move to the family home found in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Here the kids soon discover mysterious keys that open doors and can do other magical things. With each volume the author just gives the reader enough to keep them wanting more, and with each volume the story gets deeper involved into just what Key House is. Even if you are not a comic book reader, but you do enjoy suspense, mystery, and tales of the supernatural I do not think that you will be disappointed with this series.
Hill's Graphic Novels - Locke & Key
These are just the first 5 volumes, but there are more, and he is still writing this series. So there will be more in the future.
Intro to the Locke family. The tragedy that has them move into the family home.
The mystery thickens, and some of the keys/doors are found.
A villain is out to capture the keys.....
You asked why? This is the key to the start of this mystery.
Each volume gets better and better.
