Breaking News

Hot off the Press!

A rare photo of the man behind mckbirdbks: The one and only Mike Friedman!

The vote is in! Emerald Wells Cafe creator mckbirdbks is the best fiction writer on Hub Pages.

This multi-talented writer does it all. Writes a monthly chapter of the popular Emerald Wells Cafe series (that has just hit 39 installments) and hidden within the story creates a regular Speakeasy Night where the characters recite their poems to each other (all original poetry written by mckbbks) and afterwards dance all night to the juke box.

The story is set in 1956 so the music is rockin'. Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Aretha Franklin providing the tunes along with every Tom, Dick, and Diva from that era.

But it's the cafe staff and customers who we learn to love and laugh with. The glorious Em and her truck driving man Harold. Earl, the cook who watches from the kitchen. Carl, the mechanic, Gabby the dress maker, Rose, the baker, Dale, the police officer, and a host of secondary characters that live at the crossroads in an idyllic Texas town like no other.

Congratulations mckbirdbks!

Emerald Wells Cafe is your signature series, but you've also written other short fiction series on Hub Pages. 'I Should Have Died For My Country' and 'Murder Once Done' are written in three parts. And you have so many outstanding, stand alone fiction stories. The list is long, and I know what my favorites are. But I don't want to spoil it for others just getting to know you. My advice: Read them all, you won't be disappointed!

Haha mckbbks, the cats, now that they are fewer in number, are getting double the treats (my way of training them to always come when I call).

Mr Mike Friedman is one of those people that only come around every now and then. He is a champion for the needy and a superb writer etc in life and an extreme fortunate gentleman to have made the acquaintance in my case and so many others. There's hope for America with persons like himself living in the Country and that is a fact undisputed.

      Snakeslane,

      This is wonderful news!!!

I'm so happy for Mike, and he's well deserving of the tribute. This past year, I've been reading "work" in batches. One can easily get lost in piece after piece of Mike's work, and he's written enough of it to make the ambiance last for hours. :)

You did a great job "scooping" this and alerting everyone to the news. I'm impressed!

      Congratulations to you both :)

Every Tom, Dick and Diva... I love that. Funny those characters are familiar. Hmm. I just noticed the thumbnails of Mck's Murder Once Done story (which was really really good) and I can help on the links if you want. I see you already have one embedded above in blue with a referral tracker.

I like that the new profile gives us the choice of which hubs we want to feature in our six scrolling ones. That way we can promote the ones what we want to show.

Love your new additions to this one.

      Hi Dear snakeslane,

Wanted to stop by to say the thumbnail paragraphs of Murder Once Done look fabulous. I read Part 1... cannot believe I missed this but glad to find now.

I wish the story (all three parts) could be linked to this hub... I think it would be easier for folks to get to. In any event, looking awesome!

Hi mckbbks, the thumbnail option is in the photo capsule at the top when you are choosing your photo(s) for that capsule. To get more than one photo in the capsule you press Ctrl while you are choosing the photo(s) that you want. I just discovered how to do this today. The slides are working for me, but need to refine a bit as you can see.

A novel would be exciting. You have a good start.

Yes, lots of response to your winning the Fiction category. Thank you.

Hello snakeslane. I like the thumbnail slide show. Is that found in the capsule section as you are building your Hub? Seems to me 'I Should Have Died for My Country' and 'Murder Once Done' are part of the same Novel. To bad they are such a small part.

Heavens to Murgatroyd, That is a long and winding road. I would have opened a new GIMP file, turned the background blue. Pasted the paragraph into the text block and saved it as a jpeg. My way sounds easier but who knows.

I am sure I could not have navigated your method.

Uh, well...uh, gee, I don't think I could do it again. I lifted the paragraph and emailed it to myself. Then I saved it in my word program. Then I made a slide in powerpoint. Then somehow (not sure how) I brought the paragraph into the slide show as a caption. Then I saved the slide in my pictures and edited it (cropped) in microsoft office picture manager and saved it as a jpeg image phew!!! It took a lot of experimenting.

What a lovely way to pay tribute to mckbirdsbks - HubPages' best writer of fiction for 2012 - and also with reference to the best poet, the Eipgramman. Mike Friedman aka mckbirdbks versatile talents, so clearly demonstrated with Emerald Wells Cafe as well as with the rest of his hubs and illustrations - and not to talk about his comments in HubPages and replies on comments - simply command the respect and admiration of all readers.

Whoopee, Congratulations Mike. Snakeslane this is a great tribute to our favorite owner of our little cafe where we have so much fun, eating, dancing to the jukebox, watching the best videos, sitting around just 'shootn' the breeze, having a little nip of special tea..Wooah! Loved it..Cheers

Dusty I will have to look up the Carl Sanburg poem. Poetry is a very shortened, heightened version of the written word. In the right hands it pulls you in, and you are amazed. That mckbbks writing can do that for you is high praise, and worthy. Appreciate you being here for the celebration.
