There is no doubt that the list is really a chic emsemble of amazing writers. However, a strand in my sentiment got ruffled when the following belowlisted writers got no mention:Ken Follet, Sidney Sheldon, George Zebrowski, James Hadley Chase, Robert Ludlum,Isaac Asimov,Michael Crichton, Dorothy L. Sayers,Irving Wallace, Jarkie Collins and Danielle Steele.

I definitely agree with Dan Brown. There's not one of his books that I haven't read and I admire his Robert Langdon series the best :)

@Digory LM: Dostoyevski, Tolstoy, Nabokov any of the russians, but I'm not sure it is the translations or the authors themselves that make the writing so raw. Also, am I the only on who loathes Stephanie Meyers. Just wondering.

I would have to agree with most of them. I have read books from most of those artists. However from what I've read online, many of James Patterson's fans are disappointed in many of his books published in the last few years.

Excellent list! It's truly amazing how, in America, a person can simply write words on a page and become multi-millionaires! Gotta love it!

I agree with Stephen King's position, but not with J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. John Grisham should come after them.

My personal favorite is Steig Larsson. I loved the trilogy that he wrote. I wish there could be more.

Nice list, though Tolkien is by far a breed apart from the more contemporary counterparts. Maybe it is just me, but I think there's a few 19th century literary giants to whom most of these authors would readily defer. I'm thinking of Dostoyevski, Dickens, to name a few.

Good list. I haven't read all of these authors yet, but I'm working on it (except Dan Brown's stuff; I'll just stick to the movies on that one). I would love to see C. S. Lewis on this list someplace.

I don't necessarily agree that these are the TOP best authors, but they are all certainly great authors and I would definitely read any book any of them wrote simply because it had their name on it (mark of a great author, I think). But as lawrence01 says, CS Lewis, etc, except I don't agree about Tom Clancy, that man puts way too many details that go right over my head and slow the pace of the book down in his writing. And I don't see any science fiction represented. Orson Scott Card? Cheez i think i need to make my own list...

Excellent list. But a big surprise on who isn't there. CS Lewis, Shakespeare, Tom Clancy and Charles Dickens to name a few. Granted some of these won't have had the volume in sales of Books as they were too early, but their influence transcends the generations. Still a really good list. I've got Stephen King's book on the art of writing from the Library, bit more of an incentive to read it.

I agree with some of your picks - like Stephen King - but I'd have included Neil Gaiman and Michael Chabon, both highly original, imaginative writers. Meyer and Grisham (though I enjoy both) maybe not so much?

Great list. What I love about Sparks, although he's not one of my favorites, is that he got tired of not having a readership as a lit writer and decided to embrace his inner genre writer and made it the bestseller lists. Patterson was good. He's got such a factory going now it's hard to tell how much actual writing he's still doing but the concepts are no doubt all his.

I like it. Great writers. For some reason, maybe because they're creepy, I could never get into Steven King. Great list.

I might not agree with all of your choices or the order you have them but you've certainly picked some great writers.

I have to agree with Stephen King, probably not #1 but 8, 9, or 10. I grew up being scared witless after staying up well into the night reading his books. John Grisham is also good. But I have to wonder about Stephenie Meyer. Is she good or popular? They are not mutually exclusive.

This is an interesting list, in that for all their mass appeal I've personally found Rowling, Dan Brown and Stephen King to be highly overrated, even incredibly boring in some aspects. That these 3 authors have sold so many books over such prolific careers is a testament to the power of persistence. As for the rest, I have to admit that I've yet to read their work.
