Scary, Scary Halloween A Great Book For Young Children by Eve Bunting

Scary, Scary Halloween is a slightly but not scary scary Halloween book perfect for children aged 4 to 8! If your children love dressing up for Halloween and pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons and all of the associated creatures, they'll love this book by Eve Bunting. Beautifully illustrated by Jan Brett, it is a wonderful, rhyming story perfect for reading before Halloween.

"My almost 3 year old memorized (this book) in a couple of days!" ~~ Hcabats, Rhode Island, U.S.A.

My Scary, Scary Halloween Book Review

Deliciously spooky might be a better way to describe this book rather than frightening. It features all the figures you associate with Halloween including a mummy, ghost, devil and werewolf. A number of unknown sets of green eyes follow the figures through the book and in the end, you discover that the eyes belong to a group of cats and the figures are children dressed up and participating in one of their favourite activities, trick-or-treating.The illustrations are beautiful, bright and clear. Each of the creatures is easily identifiable to your child and the pictures unfold, naturally, on a fall or autumn background. The story unfolds in rhyme and contains repetitions that make it almost chant like.

Scary, Scary Halloween has 40 pages and is available in the hardback, paperback and talking book formats although the paperback book is not currently available on Amazon and so may be difficult to find. If you are building a collection of books for your child, I always recommend the hardcover version anyways, especially for books that are children's classics that you might want to keep forever.

If you want to read more reviews about this fun children's picture book, I highly recommend you read the fifteen Amazon Customer Reviews of Scary, Scary Halloween. I think such a gathering of reviews is an ideal way to get a 'feel' for a book. I do not think you will be disappointed with these reviews or this book!

Who Is Eve Bunting?

Award-Winning Children's Author

Eve Bunting grew up in Ireland amongst a strong storytelling tradition. As an adult with three children, she moved with her husband to California where she eventually entrolled in a writing class. She was uncertain of how writing would work out but had that uncertainty removed when she published her first story and then her first book.

Since then, she has written over a hundred books for children and young adults. Ms. Bunting says, "One of my greatest joys is writing picture books...the pleasures of telling a story of happiness or sorrow in a few simple words...I like to write picture books that make young people ponder, that encourage them to ask questions." She does so very well!

So well, in fact, that she has been the recipient of many children's awards including the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Caldecott Medal (for the illustrations in one of her books). She has also taught writing and lives in Pasadena, California.

"I still know the book by heart...

14 years later!"

- Margie, Floral Park, U.S.A.

Who is Jan Brett?

Jan Brett knew as a child that she wanted to be an illustrator and says, "I remember the special quiet of rainy days when I felt that I could enter the pages of my beautiful picture books. Now I try to recreate that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I'm drawing really exists."

She lives on the coast of Massachusetts but uses travel as an inspiration for her work. If you have seen her books you know that she draws from architecture and cosutmes from around the world.

Ms. Brett is a hugely popular children's book illustrator with over thirty-four million books in print and frequently has a book in the New York Times number one spot. Classic titles include The Hat, Three Snow Bears and Gingerbread Baby. Her website is considered one of the most popular author's website. If you have not seen one of Jan Brett's amazing books, you really have missed out!

"This delightful little book has all the charm and spookiness of the holiday it represents.

As a twenty-two year-old adult, I think this book has equal appeal for adults and children."

- JR Corry (Jenny), Florida, U.S.A.

Scary, Scary Halloween is one of my favorite Beginning Reading books. As you say, it is easy for children to memorize and they can use that skill to help them start to recognize words. When I taught k-1 my children often used this book as a reference when they wanted to spell some of the words. They were easily able to find them because they also had memorized it.Lensrolled to CloseEdit Lens Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin .

Eve Bunting is a wonderful and prolific kids' author. Nice lens showcasing her work! My boys used to like The Hallo-wiener (Dav Pilkey). I also have fond memories of reading the 5 Little Pumpkins board book when they were tiny. 5*
