The Year of Acheron

Updated on February 23, 2013

The Year of Acheron

From the world of the Dark-Hunters comes the most anticipated book to date...

Eleven thousand years ago a god was born. Cursed into the body of a human, Acheron endured a lifetime of hatred. His human death unleashed an unspeakable horror that almost destroyed the earth. Brought back against his will, he became the sole defender of mankind. Only it was never that simple...

For centuries, he has fought for our survival and hidden a past he never wants revealed. Now his survival, and ours, hinges on the very woman who threatens him. Old enemies reawaken and unite to kill them both.

War has never been more deadly... or more fun.

"In your past, lies your future"

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon lives a life of extraordinary danger... as does any woman with three sons, a husband, a menagerie of pets, and a collection of swords on which all of the above have a major fixation. When she's not running interference (or dashing off to the emergency room), she can be found chained to her computer where she likes to play with all her imaginary friends. With more than fourteen million copies of her books in print, in twenty-eight countries, she certainly has a lot of friends to play with too.

Writing as both Sherrilyn Kenyon and Kinley MacGregor, she is an international phenomenon and author of several other series including: Dark-Hunters, The League, Brotherhood of the Sword, Lords of Avalon, and the forthcoming Nevermore. Her books always appear at the top of New York Times, Publisher's Weekly, and USA Today lists.

Excerpt from "Acheron"
by Sherrilyn Kenyon

June 23, 9527 BC

Acheron sat on the railing of his balcony completely drunk as he watched the elaborately dressed guests arriving for the birthday party in the palace below. His back was pressed against the building while his legs were stretched out before him in a precarious balance. He wasn't sure how much he'd imbibed at this point.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to kill him. But if he were lucky, he might yet tumble from his perch to the rocks a hundred feet below and die horribly there.

That would definitely mess up his brother's birthday celebration. For the first time in weeks, he laughed at the thought of Styxx dropping dead in front of the gathered nobles and dignitaries.

It would serve them right.

"It's my birthday too," he shouted, knowing no one could hear him. Even if they could, they wouldn't care.

Not even Artemis could be bothered to celebrate with him. Why? Because she was afraid someone would see her with him...

Gods forbid.

Acheron turned his head and winced as pain cut through him. He hated the fact that she alone could give him so much anguish. So careful he'd been to shield himself from the callousness of those around him. But Artemis, she cut him on a level no one else could touch.

And like everyone else, she didn't care how much she hurt him.

Then again, he should be grateful. At least this year he wasn't celebrating the anniversary of his birth in prison...

Or a stew.

Ever alone. Even when he was in a crowd, surrounded by people, he was alone.

Truthfully, he was tired of it. No one wanted him. The only reason his so-called family cared whether he lived or died was because if he died, their beloved Styxx died too.

"I've had enough."

Even though he was only one and twenty, he was as tired as an old man. He'd lived beyond his years and wanted no more pain. No more loneliness.

It was time to end it.

The voices he heard in his head were louder now. They were calling him home..."

This is not a book I would normally pick up but your review has made it so intriguing. Excellent intro and adding an excerpt is a great idea, more meaningful than just a quote.

I have read Acheron 3 times already and feel like I know everything there is to know about the leader of the Dark Hunters. What a vivid and wonderfully creative mind Kenyon has. She makes you have a different way of looking at ancient mythology. She is quite the tale weaver.
