Smearing, leering pencil marks

Mere graphite being written

On a page. Isn’t it queer

How the type of paper determines

Whether or not the pencil smears?

I think I may switch to pen-

This way I won’t have to spend

So much time erasing and

Spacing out trying to figure out

What to do next so I may ban

The pencil and welcome in pen.

In art one is supposed to draw

In pencil, but pencil mars the page

With its charcoal gray smears.

Which really look like blotches or tears

On a finished page-

Which then throws me into a rage.

Isn’t it ironic then that

This work is written in pencil?

That sooner or later these

Words will be lost; so I guess:

Gurgle, gurgle

Splash, splash

There goes my anger

Down the drain and

It trickles away like

A summer rain.
