Pretty Little Liars Books in Order
So What Is The Reading Order Of The Pretty Little Liars Books?
I loved reading the Pretty Little Liars books in order and I'll tell you why right away. Granted, I've only read the books after starting to watch the TV series, but hen I got hooked! The thing with this series is that if you don't read them in the proper order, you will only cheat yourself. For example learning about who A was.
Or when some things come up that will make you like "Whoa hold on - what's going on here" if you read them out of order. I don't want to give away here the plot, but trust me when I say that those moments will come.
So having it all fresh in my mind - well except the last book which I'm intending to read very soon, I know exactly the proper order of this wonderful series perfect for teens and everyone who loves a nice, fresh and contemporary series. So below you will find the Pretty Little Liars book order for you to follow along.
Btw, have you started watching the ABC series Pretty Little Liars? In that case, let me know in the Guestbook section below which you think is better: the books or the TV series.
Here I will be focusing mostly on the teen books, although I will dedicate a small section below on the TV show as well.
Overview Of The Series In Publication Order
Pretty Little Liars Books In Chronological Order
The Pretty Little Liars is a pretty cool book series for teens written by Sara Shepard. It started with 8 books and it pretty soon became such a bestseller that the author had to continue with the series. Not only that, but soon started the popular TV series that most teens (and not only teens) know and love.
In fact I've spoken with the daughter of our neighbor the other day and she told me that she had no idea that there are also books with this title. She only knew about the TV show. Nuff said.
Now I'm by no means a teen, far from it, but even I loved this series. I laughed out loud so hard at times, I was in tears. The whole premise is about the the DiLaurentis twins, each pretending to be another one. Lots of lies and deceit - but all in great fun. I'm watching now the TV series, but truthfully, I have to say that I loved the books more. Not quite sure why, maybe because overall I love reading books more than watching TV, but there is is.
Having said that, let's see what is the proper order of reading this cool teen series. If you haven't started it yet and maybe you've watched the TV show and are curious to check out the books, this is the proper order you should read them:
* Pretty Little Liars (Book 1) - The first book in the series was published in 2006.
* Flawless (Book 2) - Flawless, book 2 in the teen series was published in 2007.
* Perfect (Book 3) - Perfect, the third book in the series was published in 2007.
* Unbelievable (Book 4) - Book 4, Unbelievable, was published in 2008.
* Pretty Little Secrets - This is a book that was published in 2011, however when you read the Pretty Little Liars books in order, this comes between books 4 and 5, So it's like book 4.5. Try to read it in this order to get the most out of the series.
* Wicked (Book 5) - Wicked is #5 and it was published in 2008.
* Killer (Book 6) - The 6th book is called Killer, and it was published in 2009.
* Heartless (Pretty Little Liars Book 7) - Heartless, #7 got published in 2010.
* Wanted (Book 8) - Wanted is the next in the Pretty Little Liars books in order, at #8, with a publication date of 2010.
* Twisted (Book 9) - Twisted, #9 was published in 2011.
* Ruthless (Book 10) - Ruthless is #10 in the Pretty Little Liars series, and it was published in 2011.
* Stunning (Book 11) - Stunning, is number 11 in the awesome series.
* Burned (Pretty Little Liars Book 12) - Finally Burned is the last book in the Pretty Little Liars books in order, and was published end of 2012.
Pretty Little Liars Book Series 1-4 Gift Set
Looking to start the books after getting hooked on the TV series? Here's your chance to get the first 4 books so you don't have to wait between readings. They also make great gifts for a booklover.
Just a few of the books I have at home in the series right now
Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars Book 1)
Pretty Little Liars is a teen series that started with this very book. It was first published in 2006, so it's a relatively recent series.
The story is about 4 highschool girls, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily, who are friends with Ali, the girl who has recently vanished without a trace. The 5 girls shared a secret, and now a few years after Ali's disappearance, the remaining 4 start to receive threatening IM's and messages all pointing to that very nasty secret that the girls so much would like to forget...
I don't really want to give out the story in case you haven't read it, but first of all, don't let the fact that it's a YA (young adult) book stop you from reading. It has lots of secrets, mystery and thrill and it's engaging enough to want to read the rest of the books as well. I know I did and I'm way past my teenage years.
Flawless (Pretty Little Liars Book 2)
Flawless is the second book in the Pretty Little Liars book series, and as I've started reading the books quite late, I've read them all in one sitting, so I pretty much remember everything about it. And I loved it to bits!
Here the story picks up right after the first one finishes and by now we know that Ali's body has been found....so the remaining 4 girls are now back together as friends...with their secret(s).
The plot is literally thickening and it's really difficult to put the book down once you've started reading it. Lots of suspense, just as in the first book. And some people are NOT what we, or the girls think they are...
“I'll be watching.
Perfect (Pretty Little Liars Book 3)
In my opinion Perfect was much better than both book 1 and 2 of the Pretty Little Liars series. It had mystery, intrigue, scandal, drama, pretty much it was...perfect.
Here the story picks up immediately after the end of the previous book. While Ali is already gone, this book has some flashbacks to the times when she was still around and the 5 of them were friends. The remaining 4 girls are still trying to figure out where the threatening anon messages are coming from and how much in danger they really are.
One thing I like about this entire series is that it's not really predictable. You don't know early on happens next, and this keeps the suspense and interest in the book going.
Unbelievable (Pretty Little Liars Book 4)
Unbelievable is the next book in the series, book 4. If you've read the book so far, you've been (I assume) pretty much who A. is. Some people think that it's Ali, while others think it's someone else. Here finally the truth about A. is revealed.
The plot thickens (again) and the mysteries abound. There are so many twists and turns, you won't know what hit you right until the last page. The author, Sara Shepard, really knows how to craft a well done story without making us readers bored even for a second. Other series by book 4 are becoming cliches and repetitive, but not this book. It's just as fresh as the very first book in the Pretty Little Liars books in order.
Will you be able to figure out who A is before the girls do?
Pretty Little Secrets - Interlude
While through the publication order this is one of the last books in the series, when it comes to reading the Pretty Little Lair books in order, the storyline in this book comes right after book 4, Unbelievable, so I will review it right here.
This book is basically a collection of 4 stories, each told from the point of view of the respective girl: Hanna, Emily, Aria and Spencer. The book is told a bit differently from the rest, so you might find it better - or not so good as the previous books. We get an introductory chapter written by A.
If you think that you will get here revealed lots of things, think again: the mysteries still pile up and the suspense is still getting the best of us along with the numerous secrets that simply don't seem to end. This is definitely not a boring book. Some people might argue that this is an 'unnecessary' book, but I disagree. I truly enjoyed it, even with that slightly different slant on the story.

Wicked (Pretty Little Liars Book 5)
With or without the interlude in Pretty Little Secrets, now we come to the original book 5 that follows the story of the 4 remaining (not-so-miuch) friends bound together by a terrible secret(s).
The secret of A has finally been put to rest. Or was it? And can the girls actually rest as well after such a stressful time? Noway, else the book would be become boring. And boring is one word not in the vocabulary of the author.
The secrets are really starting to get to the girls, who now are no longer so open with each other. Each keeps small secrets from the rest, be it in shame, worry or simply bad feelings. The friendship is definitely not growing stronger with all these secrets at every turn of the page.
Killer (Pretty Little Liars Book 6)
Killer is book 6 in the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard. A. died but it seems now there is a new A. tormenting them. The girls are totally confused as to who A. really is. People die, they vanish, and the mystery and suspense simply can't stop. So the question of this book is... who is the killer?
When it comes to the storyline, Killer starts right where Wicked ended. The 4 girls seem to be extremely close (again) to finally finding out (again) just what happened to Ali, their disappearing friend (and ex-leader). But the author doesn't make it easy for us to learn the secrets, afterall...
Some people found this book a bit shallow and less interesting than the previous ones, but personally I enjoyed it just as much. It's a fast read so even if you think it gets boring, by the time it truly becomes it, it's over and you're eagerly looking to find book 7...
Heartless (Pretty Little Liars Book 7)
If seemingly book 6, Killer, is a bit slow, book 7 really knows to puck a punch again. Secrets and mysteries are again on the regular menu and the suspense is practically killing us.
The storyline gets really complex, with lots of twists and if you've noticed so far, each book ends with a strong cliffhanger. This is why I suggest you get all the available books (they're not expensive) in one go and don't stop reading till the end. You'll be sorry otherwise.
In this book the girls are split up, each in a different place. Each of the girls seemingly tells the truth, but there are simply no 4 truths. 3 of them must be lying. But one thing is still true: all 4 girls are still trying to find who actually killed Ali. Can they get to the truth in time?
“Never under estimate a pretty little liar.”
Wanted (Pretty Little Liars Book 8)
Book 8 is called Wanted, and many people felt that this book is reading like the ending. The girls have escaped the framing attempt on who killed Ali, and many loose ends also tie up nicely.
However if you're sorry that the plot ends, don't worry, there are 4 more books to come, mostly due to the popularity of the TV series based on the books (yay for us!).
Maybe because this book was initially intended as the last book in the series, it has the strongest plot ever. Full of twists and turns, mysteries and suspense. Indeed it could have been a great ending to the series, but now you should be wondering...what comes next?
Twisted (Pretty Little Liars Book 9)
Since this book is basically an afterthought to the rest of the books in the series, the plot takes place a year after the previous book ended. I guess it got written due to the popularity of the TV series with the same name.
However, I'm glad the author decided to write 4 more books as we simply can't get enough of them, so all excuse for reading more books is a good excuse! But talk about mixed reviews! Some people were so happy with the way the story got tied up nicely in book 8 that they simply hated this new book. Others, like me, embraced it with all their hearts and both hands.
If you think that Sara Shepard has nothing more to say, think again. Some old mysteries are picked up again, while some new ones are introduced. And the suspense just keeps going on as usual. A great read, recommended even if you were happy with the closure book 8 gave you.
Ruthless (Pretty Little Liars Book 10)
Ruthless is the tenth book in the Pretty Little Liars series. Believe it or not, in this book the 4 friends are still looking to find who A., who is sending them the mysterious text messages, is.
The characters are well developed and quite complex, even though the books are young adult chick-lit. The suspense is still there and the twists and turns are still coming up ever step of the way. This series just doesn't get boring.
However right now we're stuck with this book as #11 comes up in June, and then the last one, #12 gets published in December. But at least while waiting for the new books, make sure you read all the Pretty Little Liars books in order (that's a total of 11 books so far, including Pretty Little Secrets), which should keep you busy for a little while.
Ali's Pretty Little Lies - 0.5
We also have Ali's Pretty Little Lies, which is a prequel written from Courtney's point of view. The story was published early 2013 and it's a companion book.
You can read more about it here.
