Quiz: Fictional Female Detectives--who do you know?

Updated on March 8, 2017

Are you a know-it-all when it comes to fictional girl detectives?

I used to think I had read most of the good girl detective fiction books. Sue Grafton's Alphabet Mysteries, Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta (oops - there is a hint to one question), even Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series can count as a mystery book.

Lucky for me, there are so many fictional female detectives out there that I will never run out of a good "next read"!

Take my 10 question quiz and see if you have read enough girl detective fiction! Or, perhaps you will find a new author. Go on, I dare ya to test yourself!

Don't be afraid! Take my quiz below!

One of my favorite female detective series-- - The Tess Monaghan Series written by Laura Lippman:

Ms. Lippman is probably one of my very favorite fiction authors. She writes a mystery series featuring the fictional female detective Tess Monaghan . Tess' home turf is Baltimore, MD. Since I have visited this city on vacation, I have a frame of reference for the setting--meaning I can picture some of the places in my head.

I would recommend that you read the books in order. It is not absolutely necessary, but it helps understand what is going on in Tess' life that is not related to the mystery being solved. In other words, Tess has a life outside of work and Ms. Lippman does a bang up job developing characters.

The following list is generated by Amazon, so the books are not in the order written. The first book in the Tess Monaghan series is Baltimore Blues . If you would like a list, please visit my "Laura Lippman and Tess Monaghan: women detecting" page.

Want more female detective book suggestions? - (some lady sleuths not mentioned in the quiz)

Yes, I know I have left out several authors and their female detective characters. I have not read everything, so please excuse my omissions. As a follow up, here is a list that I am sure will be growing. Find a new author and a new series by browsing the list below.

  1. Detective Agatha Raisin This "cozy mystery" series is created by M.C. Beaton who also writes the Hamish MacBeth series. My husband enjoys listening to the audio versions of the Agatha Raisin mystery novels.
  2. Please do not ignore Botswana's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency's Precious Ramotswe. I particularly love the HBO series based on this wonderful series.

Did you take the quiz? How did you do? Learn a bit of trivia about girl detectives or mysteries?

Was your favorite female fictional detective mentioned? If not, give her a shout out!

@Mickie Gee: He he he - I got 4 out of 10 right the first time around - and complained. You fixed the answers and even linked to them (hence giving away the answers) and so I got 10 out of 10 the second time around. I would suggest that you either NOT link to any of the answers, or you link to all the answers in those 2 questions, in order to be fair.

@TeacherSerenia: Thanks for the heads up for question #2--I corrected the answer. Good for you that you actually took the quiz. This page is several years old and you are the first one to notice that mistake by me. The other questions are correct and I put a link in the questions to the source work where I found the answers. I had never heard of Ms. Green, either until I did the research. Again, I appreciate your comment. I love good discussion.

Hey your question 2 is wrong - you asked who wites the Warshawski series - the right answer is Paretsky - which I chose, YOU claim its Laura Lippman. Not for V I Warshawski. Lippman is WRONG. Please fix that question - Number 2.

Question 5 I'll pass on since Stratemeyer probably did invent Nancy Drew and the ghost writer was Carolyn Keene.

But Question 8 - Agatha Christie IS the mother of detectives - who the heck is this Anna Katherine Green? I have never heard of her.

I did terribly, I'm afraid, even though I love Miss Marple. But you have missed some corkers - Agatha Raisin, Sister Fidelma, and the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. How about a sequel?

Don't get to read much anymore, Squidaholic! That was a great brain teaser and my brain feels teased, only got 40%.

I'm not much of a mystery reader but you peaked my interest. 5 stars!

My all-time favorite female detective -- Kinsey Millhone! I scored below average on the quiz, which surprised me because I'm a huge mystery books fan. Guess I'd better "bone up".
