Rhyme Time: Rhyming Poetry and Playful Puns

Updated on December 30, 2016

A Rhyme a Day - Take Time to Play

Welcome to Rhyme Time a place not to wine and dine, but to flip out a rhyme - maybe you could add a sprig of thyme then you’d have a heck of a time to wine and dine with the thyme while you rhyme. Whew!

But I digress while looking for an egress. If you’ve stumbled upon this lens welcome and in a moment of seriousness if I may, no more rhyme for the rest of the day, oops, I guess there’s no way to go through a day without at least one rhyme to say.

Have fun today, let your imaginations run and play and at the end of the day if you haven’t rhymed at least once I say – "shame on you, and your tongue too."

This lens was selected as Lens of the Day on: 11/23/2006 Yipee!

A Brief Word From the Lensmaster

Growing up (not that I've grown up much) I didn't write in rhyme - other than those roses are red poems I'd stay up all night thinking about sending to my first grade girlfriend. It wasn't until later in life that I fell in love with the tantalizing texture of language and the sounds words make when jumbled around like jelly beans in all sorts of crazy colorful patterns.

Rhyme is a gift of youthfulness, a gift of joy, even a gift of passion... so Step into the Land of Rhyme Time and let your Imagination run Wild!

My Pickle Poem

Featured Rhyme Time Challenge Poem by Lilly

Eat a pickle, feel so young

It will tickle on your tongue

Pickles are so very green

And so terrifically keen

If you want a crunchy thrill

Eat this big green garlic dill

A bedtime pickle provides true slumber

So snack a lot on "The Cucumber"

~Lilly

      Larry, Lenny, Lou and Lee,

Four brothers who sailed upon the sea.

They sought a great treasure of which they were told

Was marked at the entrance by arches of gold!

Oh dear, dare I utter, the words Bread and Butter?

Tasty, I guess, but I still must confess

On my burger, I'm fickle, it better be dill!

The others, I'm sorry, they all taste like swill.

And don't even get me started on sweet....

They're horrible things, I'd much rather lick feet!

OK, stick a pickle fork in me, I'm done! Carol

We rhymers can be a little childish at times.........

A pickle poem might be sour

If you snack on pickles by the hour,

So powder your pickles with some sugar

      Sprinkled with your favorite booger,

And you'll rid yourself of sour-pickle-power.

A comment for your pickle rhyme,

It's green, it's tart and so sublime.

All you need to round it out,

      Is Peter Piper's pickled trout.

I really think your poem's great,

Out of five stars, I give it eight.

Sorry, that's all I could think of on the spur of the moment.

    Worm Pie

A delectable delicacy of delightful deliciousness

Here's a little rhyme from way back when, I may have been ten, but I didn't have a pen so I had to memorize it then.... dedicated to a friend from long ago and far far away.

I once as a girl, put worms in my pockets.

No dolls for me, or even gold lockets.

Just think what my mother would say

    every week come laundry day;

into each pocket her hand would go

just to make sure they were empty you know.

But lo and behold to her great surprise,

handfuls of worms! It's hard to surmise.

What would happen if into the wash they fell,

to wiggle and whirl into a mushy brown gel.

Worms galore amid the soap and suds,

can you imagine this, on your taste buds?

Then into the dryer to get baked dry,

like a wriggling, jiggling, mincemeat pie.

So if you know a girl with fondness for worm

Please check her pockets to see if they squirm.

That little girl could well be me

I used to set all spiders free

When little birds fell on the ground,

warm love and a nest in my house they found.

All stray cats came to our door

and there was room for each one more.

My father taught me, when spreading my wings,

"look around, there's beauty in all little things".

Love your little wit in your poetry.

      Ode to Rhyme Time

The Bard has come to play a tune that may make the faint of heart swoon

There’s a guy on Squidoo called Rusty Quill

Who came up with a lens he thinks is brill

Rhyme a few words and he’ll choose the best

For inclusion in his special poetry quest.

So out they poured, from the modest and the vain

The sickly sweet, and the profoundly mundane

The clever play and startling wit

The pleading sobs and other s**t

Which amuses and entertains no doubt

But frankly, mostly lacks the clout.

I jest of course, for many are clever

No offence intended, now or never.

Forgive my profanity, it’s really bad form

But I swear like a trooper, that’s my norm

Hail fellow poets, write, write, applaud and clap

Oh, bugger it, I can’t keep up this cr*p!

You and you lens just made my day! What fun, really.

Cookie Monster: A Really Rhyming Monster

        Squidoo Poem

A poem about Squidoo by OhMe. Yipee!

        Today was the day

I was going to pull away

        and Not Squidoo!

I had other things to do

Wash the clothes and mop the floor,

grocery store and clean some more

Cook a meal for a change

Wipe the dust off the range

Squidoo has taken over my life

I'm not being a very good wife!

        Nothing has been the same

since that day Squidoo got my name!

        Today was the day

I was going to pull away

        and Not Squidoo!

Hey just one peek won't hurt a thing

Then I'll scrub and scrub that stain.

I'll just pop in for only a sec

Then I'll sweep the entire deck.

I'll study my dashboard to see how I've done

Checking my stats is always fun!

Then check my email and I should have known

There was a note from my sister, Joan!

Go to this forum and go right now!

They're all writing poems and they really know how!

Rusty Quill has a lens called "A Rhyme A Day"

Which is really neat, I've got to say!

I'll just peek in and take a quick look

It shouldn't take long, it's not a book!

But what do I do--I begin to write

Now I'm still here and my house is a site!

Squidoo, you've got me hooked really bad

Surely it'll pass and is only a fad..

My hubby is jealous and getting mad

My home is really looking very sad!

But I love to Squidoo so what can I say?

Those household chores will wait one more day!

            OhMe oh my

            you sound just like me

            on Squidoo so much

            people think that I'm touched.

            I know I should go

            and clean and sew

            too much to do

            so I'll write about stew.

            Love Squidoo folks

and those who love to joke

              You are there...here with me,

whenever I feel the need to see.

It all takes minutes, so little time,

to push the button, read a rhyme.

When I read your words in precious rhyme,

I'm not aware of the progress of time.

Distance is not important you see,

              when.....

              You are there...here with me.

@anonymous: Good luck with your green poem, when you come up with a good one post it here and I'll let my eco-geek blogging friends at Earth Friendly Goodies know and maybe they'll blog about it. You don't even have to share the 1000 bucks. =)

Enjoyed the rhymes. You might enjoy reading about my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great Aunt Tischke: The first Jewish Pilgrim at Plymouth Rock, who invented the bagel.

Here's my rhyme for today's word - faction:

I came here looking for action

Cos I'm from the rhyming faction.

              I love it just so

That my rhymes go and go.

A rhyme gives me great satisfaction!

BTW, I also have a lens called Rhyme Time. Snap!

Nice idea for a lens. Here's my attempt at today's word, galumph.

              Tabitha Jones, the great galumph,

Stormed up the road in a big Hurumph!

              Tabitha though didn't get very far;

'Cos You can't rely on a Slovakian car.

              Regards

Contrats on your lens of the day! It was funny to me that you mentioned Fesik from the "Princess Bride" in your poll, because whenever I say a rhyme someone will quote him half the time.

Congrats, fellow "Kaleidescope" Group member, on LOTD! Can you believe the luck- 2 Gp members, 2 days in a row make LOTD? Keep up the great work!

WOTD Rhyme? I'll give it a go:

              Crashing steps, overt deploys

              concurred his great avoirdupois.

Trencherman, avoirdupois- mocking our holiday gluttony?

              Diet and calories and caution,

              be damned;

it's Thanksgiving day, I'll eat like a trencherman.
