64 BELOVED BALLERINA

HARLEQUIN PRESENTS SET IN ENGLAND

Lucie Marlow was a young, talented and completely dedicated ballet dancer, well on the way to fame and fulfillment in her chosen world. It might have made things difficult when she met and married Julian Summerford, who had nothing whatever to do with the world of ballet. But the real danger to her marriage, she soon found, came from the subtle machinations of Julian's jealous and possessive mother. Who would win in the struggle between these 3 people-the fragile but spirited Lucie; Julian, torn between devotion to his mother and love for his wife; and Mrs. Summerford, who would stop at nothing to keep her son for herself.

Mrs Summerford destroys both her son's marriages by subtly putting down the women and lying to her sons. Lucie leaves with their daughter, but Julian steals the little girl back. His mother wants to raise her even though she doesn't like the child. the author gets a lot better, this hero is not at all appealing. If this was the first Roberta Leigh I had read, I don't think I would have read another.

68 AND THEN CAME LOVE

HARLEQUIN PRESENTS SET IN ENGLAND

They were an odd pair-Stella Percy, cool, aloof lady of leisure, with every quality needed for a life of luxurious elegance except money; and Matthew Armstrong, bluff, honest Yorkshireman, who had plenty of "brass" which he was proud to know had all been earned by his own hard work. From the beginnings he made no secret of his attraction to Stella, and when she accepted his proposal she was at least honest enough to admit that it was for the sake of his money. So began their curious relationship. With so much honesty around, it might well have succeeded---love might have grown between them eventually---if Stella could only escape from the memory of Charles Heyward, the symbol of her former life.

1066 AN IMPOSSIBLE MAN TO LOVE

HARLEQUIN PRESENTS SET IN TURKEY

Called to Istanbul to replace her boss on a lucrative building project, gifted architect Stephanie Rodgers was prepared to do her level best. What she wasn't prepared for, however, was her cleint's undeniably chauvinistic attitude towards career women-or the increasingly magnetic attraction for each other than friction generated. One of them would have to compromise-Stephanie, with her modern, emancipated pride, or Tariq Hamid, with his ancient, male-oriented culture. Otherwise, nothing could come of the real love growing between them.

Tariq doesn't want a woman working on the clinic being built to honor his father, but he reluctantly gives in. But he is very attracted to Stephanie and they quickly become engaged. Tariq doesn't want a working wife, but he compromises and says he will allow her to design buildings for his company. Stephanie is willing to live in Turkey and design buildings for him, but not just for his company. She wants to be free to work how she sees fit. This is important to her, a friend advises her to marry Tariq anyway and then try to change his mind. But Stephanie thinks this is dishonorable.

So Stephanie goes back to England with their quarrel unresolved. A few weeks later Tariq marries a girl, Lala, chosen for him by his family. Lala soon dies and they meet up but Stephanie can't forgive him for marrying someone else so quickly.

This is a pretty good romance, more of the book is devoted to the break up than to their actual courtship in Turkey. Tariq thought he was making a big concession by allowing her to work at all. Stephanie maybe should have married him and then talked him into letting her work more, but I respect the character for her integrity. Tariq doesn't come off as strong, he marries another girl just out of spite, and if she hadn't died he probably never would have come to Stephanie.

BOOK EXCERPT

AN IMPOSSIBLE MAN TO LOVE

"You want me to be honest, and I will. I can't forget what you said to me in London. That if Lala were alive, you'd still be with her. It make me feel you only see me as someone you come to for--for..." Unable to go own, she lowered her head.

With a muttered oath, Tariq flung away from her, his movements jerky as his voice. "There are so many things you don't know. Things I--I can't talk about. But I love you. Not just for your body, Stephanie, but because with you I'm a whole man, fulfilled in every way."

It was to impassioned a statement for her to disbelieve, but he still hadn't answered the pertinent question; and until he did, she'd have no peace.
