Preparing for the (undercover) “delicate affair”:
Nancy began explaining her idea to Harry which was related to the captain’s idea of ‘watching from afar’. It had to do with them [Nancy & Harry] having a delicate affair and sitting on a boardwalk seat. Then one would walk off and the other would follow to make up. They would - unknowingly to him - keep their eyes open for the Bandit and follow him after one of their ‘break-ups’.
Harry agreed completely that it was a superb idea.
The first day at their new task:
They drove to the boardwalk near dusk and parked a good distance from it.
“Are you ready for the new ‘task’?” Nancy asked.
“You bet I am!” Harry answered while releasing his seat belt and preparing to open the door.
“Wait”, she said, “You forgot to remove your badge and gun.”
“Oh, yeah,” he opened the glove box and put them in leaving it open for hers.
She placed hers into the glove box then closed and locked it, placing the key into her right sneaker. Turning to Harry she nodded her head and they stepped out, locked the car and they headed for the boardwalk. From there they saw the Ferris wheel - since it is so high - and faintly heard some sounds.
When they were almost there the bells, whistles, yells and voices grew louder. Without saying anything Nancy placed her arm around Harry’s hips. He felt uneasy but since it was part of the job he followed suit and did the same with his arm on her. Since they arrived before dark they went for hamburger and shake.
At the restaurant:
“Now keep your eyes peeled for him”, she reminded him.
They walked a ways until they came to a restaurant and sat on an empty bench across from the restaurant. When it became darker a couple came out and the guy told the girl that he would be right back with the car. The girl stood there waiting for him to bring the car when suddenly she felt these moist lips on hers and thought her boyfriend had the car. For a few minutes after the kiss she could not move with a warm, loving feeling filling her insides. She looked around but saw nobody and wondered who gave her that marvelous kiss.
Next a car showed up and her boyfriend stepped out of the driver’s side and walked around to open the passenger’s door for her. When they were both back in the car she told him what happened and asked why he had not kissed her like that before. He just laughed and replied that it was not him. She huffed and crossed her arms at him for laughing at her. She did not say another word all of the way home.
The 'fake' argument
Harry’s arm began getting fidgety and Nancy asked what was wrong thinking it was falling asleep. He told her how he was beginning to feel uncomfortable doing this. She told him good, they would act as if they had an argument and he would go watch the high striker. She had noticed something and needed someome to watch that at the same time that she watched for the ‘Kisser’. He could radio her when someone was about to hit the lever on the high striker.
He stood up, they mimicked an argument and he walked off. When he reached where the striker was, she received a call on her walkie-talkie to tell her he was there. She watched as more and more were coming out of the restaurant as it neared closing time. The boyfriends went for the cars and some women were in groups, some were alone. He appeared, kissed a woman and disappeared as fast. A couple minutes later he did it again. Then he did it several more times. Nancy noticed that he only kissed the women who were alone. He never went near the groups.
Each time that it happened, the bell rang and the special text sound came through from Harry. The first one was actually a call from him,
“Backup is on the way!”
“What are you talking about Harry? I did not call for any backup.”
“Sorry, false alarm, it is just part of the show.”
Detective Simpson watched the women go through their normal routine – into a daze for a few minutes while smiling and then back out of it, still smiling. By the time she had seen all of the women go through this and be ushered into the cars by their boyfriends the restaurant was closed. Not long after that Harry showed up because the boardwalk was closing down.
They returned to the car and Sgt. Wilson said, “You get in the car Nancy while I grab a soda at a machine.” He was back in a couple of minutes and she was smiling but also in a daze. No matter what he did he could not snap her out of it. When she did come out, she unlocked the car and opened his side. Then she got the key for the glove box out of her right sneaker so they could retrieve their guns and badges.
When he got in he asked, “What were you smiling about?”
“Nothing” she replied. He did not push it. “It is too late to go back to the office so I will just drop you at your place Harry and see you tomorrow at work. Tell me what that ‘false alarm’ call was about.”
“Oh that”, he said, “Suddenly there were about three guys showed up at the high striker wearing bandanas over their noses and mouths. One aimed and shot his pistol only up at the bell. Two others just stood there and pointed theirs at the crowd. At first I thought it was a hold up. Then I noticed something was wrong – maybe it was because there was no damage to the bell from the shots. The guy must have used a pellet gun or something instead of bullets.”
“That must be the signal which he used to kiss the girls. I wonder why. Here we are at your place. I will see you at work tomorrow.”
At the office:
The next day at the office Nancy and Harry were at their desks trying to decide what ringing the bell at the end of the boardwalk had to do with it. Suddenly they heard a loud ‘Ahem’ and when they looked up it was the captain.
“Well would you look who it is. Have you been asleep for a couple of days or on vacation?”
Det. Simpson quickly responded “No sir. We have been undercover as you suggested and found a couple of things out. First: He only works on women who are alone, not when they are in groups. We think that they are lonely. Second: It seems that for some reason ‘The Kisser’ only does it when the bell rings on the high striker at the far end of the boardwalk. We were working on the why part of that just now.”
“That is good. At least you are getting somewhere. Continue.”
They went back to trying figure out why it was done that way. He said he was getting another cup of coffee and she told him to get her one too - black. This was driving her crazy. When he returned with the coffee she told him that they would do this until lunch and go to the boardwalk after lunch.
Stay on this course, there is more to come…
If you enjoyed this then you will have to wait while the next segment is finished being composed, but it is coming.
After lunch at the boardwalk:
After lunch Nancy and Harry met at the boardwalk in their own cars. They had gone back to the office since they took one to lunch. They decided to walk along the boardwalk and watch for him. They had only walked a short ways and they overheard women discussing ‘him’.
“Have you noticed that he only comes out at night?” “Yes and I realized that it only happens when the moon is shining brightly, not when it’s cloudy.”…
Then Harry cut in to Nancy, “Well this was a waste of time. He won’t be here until tonight.”
“Wait”, Detective Simpson responded, “Not necessarily. We will still be able to walk the boardwalk and listen for women exchanging thoughts about what it was like. Then we will have ideas to work with.”
They walked just a little ways and heard their first group.
“When he kissed me I felt warm inside.” “That’s all? I felt as if he was pouring me a glass of red wine in front of a crackling fire.” “I dreampt that he was beside me under a warm blanket.” “What happened under the blanket?” “That is for me to know.”
Detective Simpson made a mental note of these and they walked farther. They also heard things like, ‘He is a warm, loving and sexy man.’; or ‘I only get a glimpse of that mask on his eyes – it makes him even more mysterious and charming.’
