Romeo & Juliet

Updated on January 2, 2011

"Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night."

The story of Romeo and Juliet is probably the most quoted and well known story of young love, loss, and tragedy. It is tale of two rivaling families, that were forced to be brought together through the love and death of two very passionate and determined individuals.

Most of you are familiar with this tale. Many saw or were even in the play during high-school. Some of us had to read it in English class. Chances are you saw it when it came out in 1968 or maybe in 1996. We all know what happens. I'm not going to write the whole Shakespearean script here. I just want to be able to zoom in to the characters, what their individual personalities may have been like (in my mind's eye ). So sit back, because they are all dying to tell you their side of this story that has stood the test of time.

Where did Romeo & Juliet Live?

Italy

Fair Verona, where we lay our scene...

Let me introduce you to

Romeo's Family

1996 Twentieth Century Fox Film Co.

I am Lord Montague, and this is my wife. You can refer to her as Lady Montague. Quick, tell me, you are not a Capulet. Are you? Well, we have just one question to ask you. Have you seen our son, Romeo?

Club Montague

Benvolio:My uncle has me looking for Romeo. I know where he is, but I don't know why it's always my responsibility to fetch him... I'm his only cousin, and I guess they always suspect that I know his whereabouts. Lately I've been having a really hard time avoiding trouble with the Capulet men. Now I have to babysit Romeo? I guess I just have to make sure he stays out of trouble (or make sure he invites me along). Romeo isn't a bad kid, but somehow trouble seems to find him. He has his head in the clouds. He says he's a lover, not a fighter. He'll get over it.

1996 Twentieth Century Fox Film Co.

Mercutio:Don't worry, I know I'm not a Montague. But that doesn't make a difference to me. Romeo is a Montague, and he's my best friend. All this really doesn't involve me at all. I'd rather stay neutral. I do want to add that I can't stand that Tybalt, though. Prince of Cats, he calls himself! Ha! He may be a little big for his britches. But as long as he leaves me be, I will just hate him from afar. You see, I am related to the Prince and would not want to be made an example of.

Abraham + Balthazar

Abram:

I tend to be a bit of a rumbler. Put me down, bite your thumb at me, and we will have a problem. Servant or not, I still have my pride.

Balthazar:

Romeo is my kinsmen, and a good friend. He usually calls on me to play spy. He's too busy being a romantic to do these things himself.

Let's make a brief stop and say hello to

Juliet's family

1968 Paramount Productions

Capulet: You don't have to call me Lord; I am above, as well as below all that. Unlike Montague, who falls over a title, I could very well care less. However, I am the king of my castle, that is to say, my home is my domain. I have many subjects, my wife, and my daughter Juliet included... I know what is best for my family, and they know this. That is why I am entrusted to making all the major decisions. If it were not for my sharpness, I would not be living as comfortably as I am now. I appreciate good company, good food, and good music. I don't care for those of the Montague estate, but have other more important things on my mind. Such as Juliet, she is becoming of age. I must guide her to make the right decisions for her future, and she is only a child, after all.
Lady Capulet: People say I am too emotional, but under my circumstances wouldn't you be too? I have been the matriarch of this family since I was 15! My husband demands a lot from me, he expects my support, and influence. I married well. Sometimes, however, my dear husband is very temperamental, and all I can do is support his decisions 100%. Anyhow, he is wise, and of considerable age; he knows best. Lately he has been discussing our daughter, Juliet, and her future. I wasn't too concerned with her being married or really looking into much of her adult life. But I suppose she is the same age I was when I married. He has mentioned that a very prestigious gentleman is seeking her hand which I must admit, makes me very content. I will always be behind my husband; he has done so much for me and my family. He treats my nephew, Tybalt, like a son. Why would I do anything to damage that?

Club Capulet

1996 Twentieth Century Fox Film Co.

Tybalt

What can I say? I'm a prideful person. Why shouldn't I be though? Looks, brains, money, I've got it. My uncle sometimes doesn't appreciate all I have to give, but he does recognize my influence, and my aunt knows exactly what kind of man I am. That's why I stick around; for her mainly. She has always been supportive of me. It's a pity that such a beautiful woman has to go to bed each night with someone like old Capulet. Money talks. A woman like that needs a man, not an old geezer. She needs someone more like… well, me. But never mind that. I have bigger fish to fry. Well, actually, the fish is not that big, more like a guppy

Lately that Romeo has been getting on my last nerve, going around, going around town like he owns it. Just because his father is wealthy, he thinks he can act like royalty. I hear that he is never happy. (replace comma with period) What does he have to cry about? He's nothing but an over privileged schmuck. No, I'm not jealous, I have everything I need. I just don't like the guy. I'm willing to bet in a real fight. (replace comma with period) He would be on his knees crying in no time.

Rosaline: Nobody knows me. At least that's how I feel. I'm always just Capulet's niece. That can be a little frustrating. Romeo thinks he knows me, which is an insult to my character. He has no clue about who I am! He's actually just like everyone else. He knows nothing about me. I know about him. I know that he's fickle, a fool, and a Montague. That's all I need to know. He claims to love me, but who can fall in love with someone they don't even know! I've told him so many times that I don't want anything to do with him. People call me a prude, nun, whatever. Maybe I do want to become a nun. Maybe I don't. Everybody goes around making their own conclusions about me anyway. But like I said, no one really even knows me.

The Help

1996 Twentieth Century Fox Film Co.

Nurse

I'm not surprised one bit that I wasn't clustered as a Capulet! The great Capulet and his wife never truly saw me as family. I'm just a hired hand. They adore me when I am useful, but can just as easily treat me like a second-class citizen. I don't even have a name to them; they just go around shouting NURSE! Whenever they are in need of something, they know my name is Angelica. But it shouldn't matter; I'm just a servant. Now Juliet, ah, my precious Juliet, she's the daughter I never had and always wanted. Such a bright, sensitive young woman, she is. If only her parents would take some time and really appreciate this girl for whom she really is. Sometimes she can a little impulsive and illogical, but what teenage girl isn't? She saved me, you know. I had a baby of my own, but I lost my little Susan as an infant. I was hired to take care of Juliet shortly after. She was just a baby; she needed me so much, and I felt like she filled that emptiness in my heart. Juliet tells me everything. I hope she can always trust me, because to me, she is my little girl.

Friar Lawrence, Paris & The Prince

Innocent Bystanders? Or did they have a bigger part in all this?

Neutral

1968 Paramount Productions

Friar Lawrence:My loyalty is to the Lord. I do what I hope is right in the eyes of God, and I pray that if I fail, that I may be grace with His mercy. I believe in the greater good, and I never shun anybody.

1996 Twentieth Century Fox Film Co

Paris:Yes, that's me. I am quite the bachelor, but not for long. I've taken an admiration to Capulet's daughter and I am hoping to sweep her off her feet. I am in the works of convincing her father to let me ask her hand in marriage, and perhaps he too can become a player in convincing her to consider it. I don't know why I fell for her so fast, I have tons of women wanting to be my bride. Funny thing is she has never shown any interest, poor girl, she's probably terribly shy and self conscious. She will be happy to know that I have picked her to be my bride, and I plan on staying on her side until the very end.

Prince Escalus I need no introduction, my loyalty is to justice. Obey the law, and you won't need to hear from me at all.

The ill fated lovers. Romeo and Juliet

*Try not to swoon to hard*

Romeo:A dreamer, fickle, over privileged. These are term that I've heard when people refer to me. They are wrongfully right. I am fickle, when it comes to the quarrels and rivalries my father has. I dream, yes, Mercutio has told me that dreamers are liars, but that's not true. Dreamers just take reality into a different realm. I've been called over-privileged, and yes, I'll even admit to that. I'm so over-privileged that I have a heart full of love, it is overflowing, and is being tragically wasted. Nobody understands this. I live for love, my whole existence is for this sole purpose ,so that I can bear my soul to my one true love. I will soon be going to a ball, where I will try my love one more time, if Rosaline rejects me once again, then all is lost, I may never love another. Sad thing is, and once again, my heart full of love will have nowhere to collect. All I want is to be beside my true love, and spend eternity with her, what's wrong with that?

Juliet

Everybody is always concerned with what is best for me. I understand that I'm young. But being young has nothing to do with being dumb. I can take care of myself, and who knows what's best for me but me? Recently, I've been told that I will be courted by a certain Paris fellow. Can you believe this? I don't know a single thing about him, and to be quite honest, I really don't have any interest. How can someone tell you who to fall in love with? What's the point of courtship if everybody already has a preconceived notion that I am going to marry this person? Not even my nurse understands me, I know she means well, but good intentions do not always have the best outcome. I want to fall in love, not to be pushed into it. How can I command my heart to skip a beat when I see someone, who I do not love. If this is my fate, I will miss out on all the beauty of love, courtship, and yes, even flirtation. That isn't fair. I want to decide this for myself. All I want is to be beside my true love, and spend eternity with him, what's wrong with that?

Romeo meets Juliet,

and the rest is history

At Capulet's festivity, Romeo went in search for Rosaline. Instead he found Juliet. The rest is history, you know how this love story ends, and if you don't I urge you to go buy the book, read it online, watch the movie!

"A duel on my life"! - Will you answer to this challenge?

A duel, a duel..

Letters from Romeo

Romeo: What do you think, did I truly fall in love with Juliet, or was it just a teenage infatuation?

No, Romeo, I think that you were in love with the idea of love, Rosaline didn't pay you any mind, and Juliet did. That is why it was so easy for you to fall in

He fell for her looks. In the text, he comments only on her physical beauty, I found no reference to her personality, only her unmatched beauty. I think he forgot Rosaline because Juliet was more beautiful..

    • anonymous 5 years ago

Romeo is very vain. I believe he fell for Juliets looks, and I also think that he found it easy to love her because Rosalind didn't love him..

      Boys are such a fickle

They say the love you one time and then they lay their sights on another girl

Of course it was true love! I know that when you saw Juliet, no one else mattered. It was destiny that you and her be together!

Love this -- great concept. My page keeps reloading due to the rotating slide show, so I haven't been able to read to the bottom (and this comment keeps running away from me...), so that might account for any traffic drops (just a theory). I think this is a great lens -- fun concept and enjoyable to read.
