Show me a Story
Being a new-ish mother and a creative arty sort of person this book really appealed to me.
Show me a Story is all about creating stories in a visual way - using pictures and visual prompts to encourage children to use their imaginations and come up with their own fanciful tales.
Show me a Story includes 40 crafty activities for inspiring storytelling. The book is aimed at kids but I'm sure some of the ideas could be used by adult story-tellers who are stuck in a creative rut. I'm certainly planning to use some of the ideas for my own fiction writing.
As a hoarder of fabric my favourite ideas in this book are the Story Mat and Story Scenery. The story mat is a piece of fabric which you can decorate to include hills, mountains, water, castles etc. The mats can then be used as a background for little characters (toy animals or action figures) to have adventures on. I'm already planning making several story mats and giving them out as Christmas presents next year. I love the idea of a scene with a set of steep purple mountains, or a seaside scene or a path curving its way through a forest or some sort of galaxy far, far away (that'll make a good dent in the fabric stash!). Story Scenery is a similar idea to the Story mat but can be hung on the wall as a backdrop for plays.
Show me a Story is divided into different sections. The first section is concerned with starting stories and includes story disks (wooden disks which you decorate with different images to inspire stories) ideas for making a pretend neighbourhood, and a story pool for use with several children.
Show me a Story carries on with great ideas for making story maps, puppet theatres and adventure kits.
Emily K. Neuburger has written a book jam-packed full of exciting ideas for storytelling with children.

This is a book on my wishlist. I already have one of Jean Van't Hul's books "The Artful Winter" and it's absolutely beautiful. I also follow her blog which is full of wonderful ideas for getting arty with your kids.
This is another book that's on my wishlist. It's full of creative ideas to instil a joy of learning in your child.
