So You Want to Write Online?

Updated on August 12, 2013

Are you interested in writing online, but don't know where to start?

The internet is full of opinions on just about every subject, product or whatever. There are also even more people who want to hear those opinions and who want to get fresh, honest opinions from people who have the knowledge. The problem is that too often there is a lot of spammy content out there on subject people want to learn about. If you have a love of writing and the desire to share your unique perspective with the world, then get out there and start writing. These sites are good places too start, and make sure you give several a try. Some people find a considerable more success in one site, and if you are wanting to make a little income on the side then diversification is always a good idea.

Write what you know.

Or really want to know.

It's best to start writing about things you are knowledgable about. You may be an expert in toilet repair after your recent plumbing disaster, or perhaps you are the tech person at your company and know of the funniest ways to screw up a computer. What ever it is, it will be easier to write those first articles if you have confidence in what you are saying. The more comfortable you get, the easier you will find it to write about something that interests you, but you are a novice on the subject. By approaching a new subject with a fresh perspective you will provide a valuable insight for your readers. What ever you decide to write about, remeber to have fun doing it. If you approach each piece you write as something you enjoy doing then you can relax and not worry if it will make you any money. Any money you make will just be a bonus.

With which sites have you had success? - Tell us what you think.

Squidoo and Yahoo, but haven't made enough to support myself (yet.)

I didn't know how much I liked writing until I started writing on Squidoo. Building lenses, of course, takes it to another level which I love because you can get creative in terms of presentation. I've got a few blogs too and I plan to write more on Wizzley later this year.

Thanks! I liked this lens. I've only written on Squidoo so far.

I have articles on Squidoo, eZine, HubPages and a few other places, but I find writing on Squidoo to be the most enjoyable and easiest to put together. eZine is cool, but they are very strict about the format and take 7 days to process, which is annoying. HubPages is ok, but didn't really impress me one way or the other. I like being able to mix up my words with pics and videos or products.
