True friends are like bright sunflowers that never fade away, even over distance and time.— Marie Williams Johnstone
Sunflower Quotations and Sayings
"Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men and animals. Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock."
~ Henry Ward Beecher
"And the yellow sunflower by the brook, in autumn beauty stood." ~ William Cullen Bryant
"Which makes it ironic my favourite flower isn't even indigenous to the British Isles, let alone Yorkshire. I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life that the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life."
~ Calendar Girls 2003 Movie
"The gaudy leonine sunflower
Hangs black and barren on its stalk
And down the windy garden walk
The dead leaves scatter - hour by hour"
~ Oscar Wilde
"Turn your face to the sun and the shadows follow behind you."
~ Maori Proverb
"Light-enchanted sunflower, thou
Who gazest ever true and tender
On the sun's revolving splendour."
~ Pedro Calderon de la Barca,
"As for marigolds, poppies, hollyhocks, and valorous sunflowers, we shall never have a garden without them, both for their own sake, and for the sake of old-fashioned folks, who used to love them."
~ Henry Ward Beecher
"True friends are like bright sunflowers that never fade away, even over distance and time."
~ Marie Williams Johnstone
"The Sunflow'r, thinking 'twas for him foul shame
To nap by daylight, strove t' excuse the blame;
It was not sleep that made him nod, he said,
But too great weight and largeness of his head."
~ Abraham Cowley
The Sunflower by William Blake
Ah, Sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun;
Seeking after that sweet golden clime,
Where the traveller's journal done;
Where the youth pined away with desire,
And the pale virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my Sunflower wishes to go!
This delightful and happy looking yellow flower is one of the best flowers that you can use to gift to someone who is in need of a friendly pick-me-up. Help to put a smile onto someone's face by giving them a bunch of sunflowers. This makes a wonderful gift for a friend.
Wrap a bow around these freshly picked flowers. Some cheerful and bright yellow color ribbon such as gingham, checked or spotty would look great and deliver it all with a smile. It is hard for someone not to feel happy and optimistic when they look at this beautiful and positive flower.
"The sunflower is a favorite emblem of constancy."
~ Thomas Bulfinch
"I am working with the enthusiasm of a man from Marseilles eating bouillabaisse, which shouldn't come as a surprise to you because I am busy painting huge sunflowers."
~ Vincent Van Gogh
"Fame is the scentless sunflower, with gaudy crown of gold; But friendship is the breathing rose, with sweets in every fold."
~Oliver Wendell Holmes
"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It's what sunflowers do."
~ Helen Keller
"Son flowers are the joy of my life." ~ Unknown Author
"It is not while beauty and youth are thine own,
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear,
That the fervor and faith of a soul may be known,
To which time will but make thee more dear!
Oh the heart that has truly loved never forgets,
But as truly loves on to the close,
As the sunflower turns to her god when he sets
The same look which she turned when he rose!"
~ Thomas Moore
"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It's what sunflowers do." ~ Helen Keller
"The author O. Henry taught me about the value of the unexpected. He once wrote about the noise of flowers and the smell of birds - the birds were chickens and the flowers dried sunflowers rattling against a wall."
~ Chuck Jones
"Every friend is to the other a sun, and a sunflower also. He attracts and follows."
~ Jean Paul Richter
"With zealous step he climbs the upland lawn,
And bows in homage to the rising dawn;
Imbibes with eagle eye the golden ray,
And watches, as it moves, the orb of day."
~ Erasmus Darwin
"Bring me then the plant that points to those bright Lucidites swirling up from the earth, And life itself exhaling that central breath! Bring me the sunflower crazed with the love of light."
~ Eugenio Montale
"Big doesn't necessarily mean better. Sunflowers aren't better than violets."
~ Edna Ferber
"Eagle of flowers! I see thee stand,
And on the sun's noon-glory gaze;
With eye like his, thy lids expand,
And fringe their disk with golden rays:
Though fix'd on earth, in darkness rooted there,
Light is thy element, thy dwelling air,
Thy prospect heaven."
~ James Montgomery
My Attempts at Being Green-Fingered Often Fail Miserably
I really adore bright and cheerful yellow plants. However, friends and family know that I am not all that good at growing things. I've tried to grow flowers lots of times. I've even tried growing plants that people say cannot fail. Sadly, I am living proof that they can fail. I thought I'd be able to grow a cactus since these don't require very much in the way of care. Unfortunately even those were a failure.
Last year, my daughter brought some sunflower seeds back from school. I was determined that we would be able to grow them. And we did! It's not the best example of its kind but I managed to keep one sunflower plant alive. I'll never be much of a gardener but that was a good moment for me. We watched this plant grow against all hope really. Sometimes we can be better at something than we really give ourselves credit for. Being able to grow something finally gave me hope. The message I took from the whole experiment was that sheer perseverance can pay off in the end. It made my daughter very happy too.
