Superman Drops the Red Undies and Lois Lane
I’m not a huge fan of comics, but even I raised my eyebrow when I heard that the new Superman comic series was to lose the infamous red undies and Lois Lane as the love interest. Those are some of the main characteristics that separated Superman from other superheroes – the bright red undies and the love he has for Lois Lane. But DC Comics thinks that Superman is do for a makeover with losing the red underwear and Lois Lane and replacing them instead with just an all blue bodysuit and cape, another love interest besides Lois Lane, and a modernized story line. I guess they disagree with the “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” motto. Here are the latest rumors circulating around the new series due out in September.
So, this more ‘modern’ story line distances itself from the classic storyline of Superman being brought up by humble adoptive parents and his growing loyalty to protect humans worldwide. Instead, we are given a storyline focusing more on the lonely Kal-El from the planet Krypton and his attempts to deal with his surroundings and superpowers. This series seems a little darker than the more ‘humanized’ Superman we’ve been accustomed to – particularly with his dealings with Lois Lane.
Lois Lane will be dating another individual and working in a different sector at the newspaper. And it’s rumored that Superman would be a bachelor but may have a love interest all his own (Wonder Woman seems the woman of a choice by some spectators). But it would be interesting to see if the writers decide to throw a twist in how Lois Lane and Clark Kent came to be or if they will stay close to the original story line.
More rumors, apparently this new Superman will be more homesick than usual and will keep ties to his home planet Krypton anyway he can, including his suit designed to pay homage to it. It’s said that the he will progress from boots and jeans, to a suit of battle of armor and cape, and possibly go through a few more alterations until he pulls on the red undies.
At first, I thought the writers were trying to rip apart the original storyline of Superman and create a whole new series. But obviously I was wrong and this series is just an adjusted prequel to the story of Superman we’ve read and seen. Hopefully, more leaks will come out to give us more details and pictures of this new series.
