The Fortune Cookie Said and Other Foodie Poetry

Updated on November 5, 2014

The Fortune Cookie Said and Other Foodie Poetry

This hub offers you some of my original poetry and more inspired by food, drink and dining experiences.

I hope you enjoy my initial selection of poems on the subjects of fortune cookies, strong coffee, bread, sushi and grocery shopping.

I have also sprinkled in gifts and food items that are represented in the poetry.

I expect to add more poems over time as I experience new food, drink and dining yet to come. Enjoy!

The Fortune Cookie Said

The fortune cookie said

"Golly Gee" means curried chicken

In Chinese, which may be so

Some people played

The lotto on the numbers rolled

inside, and too many people won

Since the factory copied lots of scrolls

Some have read good fortune

Or a truism on the paper

From the factory that makes

These cookies that

Aren't Chinese anyway

But take a habit accepted by many

Fold it into your custom

Repackage it and give it back

They're now expected with the check

The fortune cookie said

"Good things come to those who wait"

Whether from Confucius or not

Someone foretells, for me, a happy fate

Drinking Strong Coffee

Drinking strong coffee

In a real cup with milk and sugar

I mused on how we like our joe

Cappuccino, latte, mocha

Add soy, low fat, please make

Mine a double macchiato

In some cities, indies rule

Trident, Vics, Bookends, here

Baristas trained to swirl the froth

On top of this cup of caffeine cheer

But Starbucks has the lions share

In nice surroundings everywhere

A common java staple

Venti, Grande, Tall, heck I don't care

As long as the coffee's good

And it doesn't lead you broke

The aroma of a good roast

Can make you heady from the grind

Before the water's even added

It widens up the nose

Keep the beans growing and

The roasters hot

And the grinders on fine

Just give us the best you got

Cause we love our coffee

Black, white or frothy treat

It's a natural high to keep us going

And an excuse for a nice place to meet

Falling In Love at a Coffee Shop

Bread is the Staff

Bread is the staff of life

So it has been said

Water, yes fresh and clear

And too, for survival, bread

I'd like a slice of bread

A thick buttered slice will do

No not the square kind

In the plastic, for the masses

Rye, French, Italian , croissant

An "everything" bagel, plain, no smear

Basil, olive, onion boule

I hold fresh bread very dear

Let the yeasty beasties do their job

The bread rises, punch it twice

Maybe I'm a bread snob

Fresh bread is more than nice

Don't get me wrong

flatbreads too can be delish

fresh pita, naan, tortilla, injera

serve them up with ethnic dish

From the bakery or bread store

From the bread maker if there's time

The fresher the better, I implore

The fragrance heady, the taste sublime

Sushi Haiku

A Japanese poetic form is just right here

plentiful is rice

ripe fruits of the sea are caught

wrapped in thin nori

graceful tuna gives

balance for delicate bite

sticky rice, substance

Thick Golden Honey

For thick golden honey one must thank the bees

That suck up the nectar from the plants and trees

When flowers all colored send out their scent

Attracting the bumbles without asking for rent

Excitement is rampant as they enter the hive

With nourishing food for the colony to thrive

The combs of the hive are the factory cells

For producing the honey the beekeeper sells

At the markets and farm stands in amber hues

To spread on my bread and sweet tea infuse

Wheeling the Basket

A trip to the grocery store

Wheeling the basket

Up and down the aisles

Twenty of them at least

A kind of exercise, seems like miles

Must count for something, a grocery trip

No it's not the YMCA or a run

But it has got to be done

Calories off, a bonus won

Finding what's on the list

What's on sale, what's new

First, do you pick the bread

or the veges, the meats for the stew?

Stores reinvent every few years

Need to re-learn your way around

Where the heck are the pickles that I like

Asked for help, they were found

Now I'm trying to use cloth bags

But the plastics are a habit

Had a big reusable bag in France

But then, those stores sold rabbit

I double check the bill

Did I get all my discounts?

I try to shop wisely

Money towards something that counts

Can't wait to get it all done,

Unpack at home, first the frozen

My daughters looking to see

What the heck have I chosen

What Not to Do With the Grocery Cart

Going To the Hotdog

About a Visit to the Coney Island Hotdog (eatery) in Bailey, Colorado

Going to the Hotdog

A fun Father's Day excursion

With all the girls in tow

A half day diversion

Hotdogs and fries, a real treat

Kraut and mustard on the side

"one dog to another", Marvel said

Bogo and Koda along for the ride

Onion rings and shakes

Simple fare for such a drive

But the idea is just silly fun

Hotdog shaped eatery, is not a dive

Families come from all around

To stand in line on this sunny day

Dogs are welcome on the porch

Place your order, don't delay

Now if she's lucky, your 4-legged dog,

Will also get something to eat

Sometimes the staff comes out on the porch

To give your dog a hot doggy treat

Well, this Coney Island Hotdog

Is a long way from New York

We remember to lick our lips

Just enjoy the hotdog and skip the fork

The Olive

The olive grows upon the tree

In Spain and Greece and Italy

It's green or black by its genetics

This ancient fruit, simple aesthetics

It's oil, highly prized and at a cost

Exquisite on salad lightly tossed

Bread dipped in evoo, with pepper divine

Olive oil the counterpart of red wine

The classic martini of course must have

An olive in tipped glass, a soothing salve

And stuffed, the little guy with pimento

Eaten quickly, leave no memento

Little olive, ancient fruit

Keep our hearts healthy

The olive tender be astute

Olives daily, growers wealthy
