The Four Seasons Sonnets

Updated on October 9, 2014

Sonnets for the Four Seasons

As a poet, I am inspired by the world around me; by the vistas of nature that I see, by the fragrance of garden flowers, by the sweet strains of music that I hear. So I penned a 14 line sonnet for each of the four seasons of the year.

I hope you enjoy my original sonnets for the four seasons.

Introduction to the Four Seasons

Spring is the season of rebirth

Summer is the time of greenery

Autumn heralds time at the hearth

Winter whitens the scenery

Here are sonnets on the seasons four

To be perused on any day

Please enjoy this hub as you explore

The wealth of poetry in your way

Spring Sonnet

Supple shoots emerge from loamy peat

While last of frost retreats for half a year

Songbirds warble greetings warmed by sun's heat

Forest glen ripples with a herd of deer

The world is awash in the palest green

Welcome harbinger of lushness to come

Fauna awaking or arriving on scene

Are at home as they feast on tasty crumbs

Truly, spring is a delightful season

Giving hope, promise for a hungry world

This providence gives life glowing reason

As brilliant carpets are on Earth unfurled

Fallow fields turn gold with myriad grain

Nurtured by rich soils, sun and soaking rain

Summer Sonnet

Warm sunny days to nurture fertile fields

And ripen fruits upon the arching trees

Bounty, the archetypal summer yields

With measured rain and sun in great degrees

Bristling, teeming flocks neither come nor go

Parenting young with lessons of the wild

Telling the fledglings what they need to know

How not to be by enemies beguiled

Some await the cool of dark to forage

For morsels to appease their appetite

They need not worry of future storage

Vast is the supply for creatures of the night

Long days parenthesized; crows and crickets

And in between, romping in the thickets

Autumn Sonnet

I take a breath of air that's cool and crisp

As I behold the golden shades of fall

The green yet on the trees is but a wisp

Reminding me how nature does enthrall

With palette on the canvas of the Earth

Inspiring mortal artists to capture

Each season set around the worldly girth

The best, with oils and pastels enrapture

Autumn is the start of hibernation

Crumpled leaves, fodder for the woodland floor

Baring branches for snow's visitation

And violent winter storms' frosty décor

My throat feels the coolness of Autumn's wind

Since Nature sought to Summer's lease rescind

Winter Sonnet

In winter's bleakness there is yet beauty

Among the twisted shapes of brackened branches

For nature does not shirk her true duty

Snow laden hills prone to avalanches

Ursine dens reverb with deep even breaths

While on the tundra, reindeer shelter seek

The weakest are heralded to their deaths

Resourceful feisty souls win over meek

In the air ice crystals sparkle and dance

Casting rainbow hues about the quiet plain

Near jagged peaks a glacier may advance

As stiff winds sweep the desolate terrain

Ah, winter, your grey-white landscapes contain

Hidden treasures to subtly entertain
