the ironhorse sanctuary: epilogue
“What the hell was that all about?” Acrobat demanded once they judged the humans were far enough behind them.
“I screwed up,” Kelpie told him. “I never should have gone after Stray.”
“Why?” Acrobat asked. “And why did he let you go?”
Kelpie touched the scar on her palm. “Because he’s Family.”
“No, I heard you. I just don’t . . . well, this certainly complicates things. We can’t kill him now,” Acrobat said.
“Or let him be killed,” Kelpie said, thinking of her old boss. “Morgrei would like nothing more than to dissect Stray, or at the very least to put out his eyes.”
“He won’t be able to now,” Acrobat said. “He’ll have hell to pay if he tries.”
“When has he ever cared about what us rookies say?” Kelpie asked bitterly.
“He’ll learn to care, or else he’ll learn to fly – or more likely go splat,” Acrobat said. “You don’t mess with Family. Not now that we’ve finally got the strength to protect each other.”
“Still,” Kelpie said, “It would be easier if Stray were on our side.”
“Do you think we can bring him over?”
The smile Kelpie gave was almost predatory. “Well, it’s certainly worth a try.”
Thanks for reading The Ironhorse Sanctuary. I hope you enjoyed it! The misadventures of Stray, Declan, and Blaire will continue in Facade Novella 3: Spirits of Decay, when the three go with Thomas and Beatrice to clear an old mansion of arcana and occult artifacts. It's supposed to be a simple job, but things quickly take a turn for the worse, and one of our heroes finds his life on the line when an ancient evil is set free.
Spirits of Decay will be available as an ebook on Kindle and Nook by the end of September 2013. I'll begin making chapters available for free here on HubPages in December. Check out my website at www.hlfleming.com for updates and some sample chapters of my other series, The Gargoyle Legends.
