THE POPOL VUH (MAYA-QUICHE):THE CREATION MYTH AND THE SERPENT
THE MAYA QUICHE AND THE POPOL VUH.
The Maya Quiche were the Mayas who were in Guatemala. They wrote THE POPOL VUH. It is translated as: THE CONGREGATION'S BOOK. It tells us about the CREATION MYTH in a very elegant and poetic way. We see on this book the symbol of the serpent and we will discuss its meaning.
Here Tepe Gucumatz, the Creator, talking (USING THE POWER OF THE WORD) made the world. This is similar to the Bible: "In the Beginning it was the WORD and THE WORD WAS GOD..." In fact, there are some similarities between the popol Vuh and the Bible. We will tell you those similarities and more.
TIKAL: A GREAT MAYAN CITY IN GUATEMALA.
This Mayan city is in Peten, Guatemala. It was the biggest city of the Mayas; the size of Manhattan (NYC) and it had a complex structure with tow great pyramids: THE PYRAMID OF THE GREAT JAGUAR (Picture) AND THE PYRAMID OF THE MASKS. One is just in front of the other one.
It was not easy for me to walk up to the top of the Pyramid of the Jaguar; but when I got there I found a lady around 70 years old exercising right there! What Mexicans eat? Just tacos and tortillas? wow! I was impressed!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? There are many theories. It is up to us, I guess, to believe which one is the right one. I tell you two meanings and why I like them:
1- PLACE OF THE TONGUE.
2- IN THE WELL OF WATER.
I like those two meanings. The first one comes from the Maya Itza (Remember CHICHET ITZA, in Yucatan). The latter comes from the Yucatan area too. It makes sense since CHICHEN ITZA means THE WELL OR MOUTH OF THE MAGICIAN.
The original name was YAX MUTAL or FIRST MUTAL. What does MUTAL mean? It is not know yet. There are many enigmas left by the Mayas. It is the most enigmatic culture in the planet. Archeologist, I am sure, will discover more pyramids and things from the Mayas. Remember the word "MAYA" is everywhere: Maya was the mother of Buddha; Maya was a Greek goddess; May (Mayo in Spanish) is the fifth moth; the RAMAYANA (Please take "RA" AND "NA" from that word and you will find "MAYA") tells about people called "THE MAYAS"; the 'MAHANVARATHA" , the great sacred book from India, tells about THE KING OF THE MAYAS.
THE IMPORTANCE OF "THE WORD" FOR THE MAYAS:
Let's go back to the names of TIKAL. Both "Place of the Tongues" and "In the well of the water" remind me CHICHEN ITZA: The Well or Mouth of the Magician. Actually the throat is a well where the tongue is and that place is where the "WORD" comes out! The sound, the "Word", is one of the things that humans have (Actually humans do not understand what is the "word" for). For the Mayas the word was really important. A liar was worst than a robber because he was using the word in a very wrong way. The power to talk was giving from the gods to humans.
Modern people cannot talk. I am serious, I am not kidding. Arguing, insulting, talking trash is not talking. The word was giving to men not for that, but for understanding each other. Talking is to help each other and ask for help. Anyone can utter words, but not everyone can talk.
THE CREATION ACCORDING TO THE POPOL VUH
The Popol Vuh the great book of the Maya-Quiche from Guatemala tells the Creation in a very similar way the Bible does!
It was nothing at all, according to the Popol Vuh, but the water, tranquility and "SILENCE." Only the Creator, the Maker, Tepeu and Gucumatz were there surrounded with light! They came together and said: "Let's put together our thoughts and "WORDS" and we will not be happy till Man is created.
So, the silence was broken and they started to create everything with their "WORDS": earth, plants, animals, and so on. The Bible says: "In the beginning it was the Word and THE WORD WAS GOD." Then the Bible tells how the Word created everything until the first man was created.
Tepeu and Gucumatz created some men (From mod, from wood), but they were not good because they could not say their names. This is really interesting! It is telling us that some men were destroyed before the known men or modern men were created. Actually, according to The Popol vuh, one of these races of men was destroyed by a big flood (the Great Flood from the Bible). Maybe telling us about people from Lemuria and Atlantis! They forgot the wisdom at the end of their time. It means, they forgot the name of the gods, they could not speak the name of the gods.
THE FIRST PEOPLE!
Finally they made the man who was able to speak their names! Actually it was four men. Why? The number four indicates the four directions: North, south, east and west. So, do not take it literally. It means they created men who populated everywhere. Adam and Eve most represent the same idea: Not a couple, but the people living in the Garden. Let's remember Cain run away after he murdered his brother Abel, but he found a woman. Where did she come out from? Obviously, there were more people, not Just Adam, Eve and Cain.
Actually, this is obvious because: Where all races came from? There are not just whites or blacks, but oriental and people from Latin-American too!
These men were different; they were made from white and yellow corn. We know CORN was sacred for Mayas and Aztecs. These were sacred people without mistakes (Like Adam and Eve) and able to speak their names. That means able to speak with the gods as Adam and Eve did when they were in the Garden.
We know the first woman came out after these men, as Eve came out after Adam. But, not just that. The first woman came out when those men were sleeping. Coincidence? Well, let's remember the Aztec myth where Ometeotl created a man called TLAKE NAHUAKE (Close and together, because he was close and together with Ometeotl). One day after taking five flowers he went to sleep. When he was sleeping then Ometeotl created MAKUIL XOCHITL, the first woman. Coinsidence again? MAHIL XOCHITL means five flowers!
One more point: do you know what Tepeu Gucumatz was? What does it mean?
We can see, so far, that the POPOL VUH is very similar to the story of Genesis in the Bible. Actually it is the same, but in another way.
Some similarities: The planet was empty, only water and darkness was in the beginning. Only the Creator or the Maker was at that moment. Everything was created by the WORD. Men were created first. Women were made when men were sleeping. The Great Flood.
On the Bible the Creator is called THE WORD. Let's remember John: In the beginning it was the WORD and THE WORD WAS GOD AND EVERYTHING WAS DONE BY THE WORD AND WITHOUT IT NOTHIG COULD HAD BEEN DONE!
On the POPOL VUH the Creator is TEPEU GUCUMATZ, what is that?
What is the difference between the WORD and Tepeu Gukumatz? This needs a good explanation. Please pay attention:
TEPEU means sovereign.
GUKUMATZ comes from q'uq' and kumatz (Mayan words). The first one is the name given to the QUETZAL (See picture), a bird which plumes are blue, green and red. Kumatz means snake or serpent. So GUKUMATZ is a serpent which has blue, green and red feathers. QUETALCOATL comes from Quetzal and coatl (serpent).
The blue color represents SKY (The spiritual level or heaven). The green color is nature. The red color is FIRE! The celestial fire or burning bush which spoke to Moses.
TEPEU GUKUMATZ is the Plume Serpent! The same KUKULCAN for the Mayas (in Mexico) or QUETZALCOAT for the Aztecs or the DRAGON of China! Why a serpent? How does sound (THE WORD) travels? Yes, it does through WAVES (As a serpent moves!).
TEPEU GUKUMATZ is the primordial energy or force which created everything. The Bible does not speak of an old white man creating the planet or the universe? It says: THE WORD, the sound and sound is energy and moves as a serpent. It is TEPEU GUKUMATZ, KUKULCAN, QUETZALCOATL, THE KUNDALINI of India, the DRAGON of China.
Our ancestors did not worship an animal, but the symbol! The Plumed Serpent is a symbol of the main and primordial energy which created the universe and this planet!
Now we can understand why the planet was created in seven days. Those seven days represent the seven vibratory levels of the universe. The WORD, sound or music, has seven notes or seven level of vibration. The seven days are a just a symbol that we can understand now thanks to our science. That is why both theories (The Big Bang and the String Theory) talk about a big explosion as the creator of the universe. All that was known by our ancestors of every culture!
