The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Children's Classic

Updated on October 4, 2013

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare

I have read The Witch of Blackbird Pond twice, once as a child and again as an adult. Not surprisingly I found inspiration from both reads, but from different perspectives. A beautifully written historical novel, for children or adults, The Witch of Blackbird Pond is set in Puritan Connecticut in the 1680s. Sixteen-year-old Kit arrives by ship from Barbados and is about to discover how very colorful and exciting her life used to be.

Kit's First Glimpse of America

"She didn't want to admit how disappointing she found this first glimpse of America. The bleak line of shore surrounding the gray harbor was a disheartening contrast to the shimmering green and white that fringed the turquoise bay of Barbados which was her home."

Let Me Introduce You to The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Newberry Award Winning Novel by Elizabeth George Speare

Kit takes us on her journey from a colorful and carefree life of priviledge in Barbados to a gray and stark life in 1680s Puritan New England. Woven into her story is the rich history of early America with all its contrasts. Kit's spirit is dampened, but not diminished, as she learns to cope with what today we would call culture shock. Daring to befriend the "witch of Blackbird Pond," Kit teaches us about courage, sacrifice, an indominatable spirit and even romance.
