Things that Bite in the Night - Paranormal Novels

Updated on August 23, 2012

Reading Paranormals is Addictive

What can I say, I have an addiction and there is no cure or ten step program to help me. I'm up all hours of the night reading. Quite an intellectual pastime you might say. Well, not exactly, since I am absorbed in a world of fantasy that is unlike any world that you can imagine.

My reading world is filled with vampires, werewolves, angels, all kinds of shapeshifters, ghosts, wizards, mages, and dragons. These are not creatures that have ever walked this earth, at least not that we know of. They exist in the imagination of the writers that create them and the readers that love them.

What is addictive about the books I read is that they offer all the excitement, suspense and romance that anyone could ever want in a novel, and they come in series. One book is never the end of the story, and I cannot wait for the ones that follow. I haunt my Amazon wish list to see if another book has come out in the many paranormal series that I read.

What Makes a Good Paranormal Romance

Lots of Smooching and Lots of Excitement

First and foremost, the author has to create an out of this world romance. Need I say more? The characters must have personalities and depth and be fully drawn out so that they can be understood on an emotional level. If the author fails to develop the personality of these paranormals then readers will not be able to believe in their existence.

It is important that the dialogue flows in a way that makes the reader feel they are eavesdropping on the scenes, rather than reading a story.

Since the relationship between the hero and heroine are the key to the success of the story, their attraction must have substance and believability, which includes a build up to their meeting, a reason for them being together and a lot of resistance at least at first. But not too much, because if readers have to wait too long for them to admit they are attracted to each other, they will quickly lose interest.

Special abilities, creative weapons, sophisticated communication devices, eerie scenes, along with strange lands and modes of transportation are intricate parts of the story and require a great deal of knowledge and creativity on the part of the author. It is critical that the action and suspense be woven into the developing relationship between the hero and heroine. They require someone to fear, hate, threaten, and sometimes kill to protect earth and the unsuspecting human inhabitants from complete destruction.

The ending should resolve any problems between the hero and the heroin, kill off at least one of the demons threatening the world, but it can, and often does, leave the possible destruction of the world still looming for future novels in the series. Other paranormal figures who participated in the novel will eventually find their mates and continue the action into the next novel in the series, which keeps the reader coming back. Are you hooked yet? Believe me, you will be.

How Many Paranormal Romance Series Do I Read

And How do I Keep Them Straight

If I told you I read 25 different paranormal series I think I may be leaving a few out. I can't keep them straight. That is why I have five bookcases filled with paperback paranormal, already read, romance novels. This is my reference library. I have to go back to at least one book in the series when a new one comes out and sometimes further back.

Let me warn you, picking up a paranormal book in a series you have never read has to be the first in the series or you will be hopelessly lost. The reviews say that is not true, don't believe it. Not only will you be lost but you will be missing out on all the fun. Sometimes there is a demon waiting to control the world and if you do not know the who, what and why, it is going to take a while for you to understand the story when the characters begin their perpetual search for this demon. Sometimes there are family members who have been captured by some nasty paranormal in another book and you wonder why everyone is looking for these characters. Many times there are references to previous incidents that without having experienced them the book will fall flat or leave you feeling out of the loop. Read these in order to get the most out of them and the utter assurance that you will eventually develop an addiction.

Black Dagger Brotherhood by J. R.Ward - My All Time Favorite Paranormal Characters

The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J. R.Ward are a group of six vampires warriors, created by the Scribe Virgin who is their deity. The Brotherhood defend their race against another group known as the Lessers. Lessers have traded their human souls for immortality to a leader named the Omega. He in turn uses them as weapons against the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Lessers have their own group of leader warriors, who are, of course, the bad guys.

J. R.Ward's series also includes characters and love stories beyond just the Brothers, so the series continues on even after we have read about each of the Brothers. Subsequent novels include the Brothers no matter who the hero and heroin are in the story. So you always find out what is happening in the lives of the vampires you have come to love.

This series is not only addictive, but the most intriguing of the paranormal series that I read.

Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian - Similar Yet Different from Black Dagger Brotherhood

The Breed are a group of vampires who are descendants of aliens who landed on earth long ago. They are the vampires who want to live in peace with humans, who are unaware of their existence. Their goal is to blend without ever revealing their true identity.. But there are a group of rogue vampires who feel they were created to rule over humankind. Their mission is to destroy the Breed so they can rule the world.

There are no breed females, but there are humans, known as breedmates, whose genetic makeup allows them to mate and procreate with the vampires. They do not know they are breedmates until the Breed discover them through their unique birthmarks. These females are strong, independent and always ready and able to fight along with their mates, so once they mate with the Breed, they become an intricate part of the series and the fighting.

All the rogue vampires have fallen into bloodlust, feeding and killing humans. The primarily purpose of the Breed and their mates is to stop these vampires. If the rogues ever win the battle, the world as we know it will no longer exist.

Now how can you resist at least trying this series?

Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter - The Story of Pandora's Box and What was in It

Another terrific paranormal series is the Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter. Her heroes were once powerful guardians to the Gods. When the Gods choose Pandora to guard a box containing demons, The Lords resent not having been chosen.

Thinking this task should have been theirs,The Lords' jealously forces them to kill Pandora and release the demons within the box, just to make a point with the Gods who slighted them. They try to put the demons back, but are unsuccessful and some of the demons take The Lords as their hosts, while others escape to wreck havoc on the world.

As punishment for their crimes, The Lords are banished to earth along with their demon hosts who are a part of them for eternity.

An organization of humans known as The Hunters have just one goal, to find Pandora's Box and put the demons back into it thinking it will rid the world of evil. If this happens,The Lords will die because they cannot live without their demons.

To stop The Hunters, The Lords must find the box themselves and keep it away from The Hunters. The Hunters are not the only ones after the Box. Cronius, the King of the Gods, also wants it and would like to get rid of The Lords.

In come the ladies, who bring love to The Lords, ease the torment from their demons and help them in their search for Pandora's Box. Nothing in this world can match the romance between The Lords and their mates. The tears that you shed because of the pain the demons cause The Lords and the joy you experience when each one finds their love is priceless.

Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole - You Thought There was No Such Thing

All the mythical creatures you thought never existed can be found alongside humans in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. Hundreds of immortals of all kinds, vampires, shifters, fey, valkyries, demons, wizards, witches and more exist in these novels.

Their world is The Lore and they are the Lorekind and they walk among us in this series. They are beautiful, handsome and sexy beyond comprehension. A Lorekind can be your neighbor, your boss, your friend and you would never know it. They have an aversion to the sun. Know anyone like that?

The Lore war among themselves using different strengths and weaknesses that belong to their varied species. Immortals with their own prejudices and hangups, they fight amongst each other and find love in unlikely places with unlikely mates.

"Every five hundred years, the Accession, a battle for supremacy, rages. That time is now..."

Quote is from Kresley Cole, Immortals After Dark

These are my Favorites

There are Many More

My reviews are story summaries because there is no need to give you a review of each series because to me they are all great to read. I have never been disappointed with any of these paranormal series. Each one takes a different twist on a similar subject and each has characters that I have come to love and will miss when the series ends.

All the paranormal characters in every one of the books I read are immortal. That does not mean they cannot be killed. It only means that if left alone, they would not die. Each species of paranormal has a different vulnerability that results in their death. Not all of them drink blood or avoid sunlight.

Vampires are the most frequent heroes of the books I read, but I have read series in which shapeshifters, angels, witches, and fey have been the main characters. There is no limit to what you can find in a paranormal romance and no limit to the thrill and excitement you can experience from reading them.

Enjoy your new addiction.

Here are the Books - Remember Once You Start There is no Cure

I have listed some of the series I read in sets, but, of course, you can always just start with the first book in the series. But beware, you will eventually be buying more than the set. I am just making it easier and less stressful for you, so you don't have to go back to the store.

Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set (Sookie Stackhouse / Southern Vampire)
Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set (Sookie Stackhouse / Southern Vampire)

These are the books that produced the TV series Trueblood and the vampire Bill Compton whose true love is Sookie Stackhouse. The characters are brought to life in all the violent scenes from the many books written by Charlene Harris. If you can stomach the blood and gore, join the cast of Trueblood on HBO during the summer months.

I still like the series by Kresley Cole, mainly due to her writing quality and style. I'm pretty tired of all the rest, seems I am just reading the same story over and over again. I may or may not pick up Gena Showalter still, depends on my mood and whether or not I find something else in science fiction I'd rather read. I do love books by Kim Harrison but she is publishing the last book in her series this year so that will be an end to it. Bookstores put her in horror but it is actually urban fantasy without the mush and romance. Much better!

I don't typically read paranormal books... A Discovery of Witches got my attention, though. It's not gory, which helped.

@anonymous: These are really not scary novels. They can be found in the romance section not in horror or science fiction. They are meant to tease and tantalize not to scare.

@ItayaLightbourne: I am picky too. I have skimmed through lots of paranormal books that did not seem to go anywhere or at least the way I like them to flow or the writer does not create real, indepth characters and have never read that author again. Sometimes the series isn't captivating and I don't want to go on with it.
