What is a Paleontogist?
Firstly, Paleontology is a science. It is the study of the history of life on Earth as it is reflected in the fossil record. So while most of us assume that a palaeontologist purely studies dinosaurs, you can see that they in fact study all life.
Just like many other careers, a good educational background is essential. If you are at high school, then the best preparation is simply to achieve the best grades you can in as many subjects as you can. You will need after all, need to gain entry to a good college or university. This is an absolute prerequisite towards your chosen career.
It is generally accepted that to embark on a career in this field, you will need to study hard at science subjects for example biology and geology.

If you went back just a couple of hundred years, then there was no such thing as a Paleontologist. In fact nobody knew of dinosaurs or that they had ever existed. Nowaday's there are Paleontologists hunting for fossilized dinosaur bones in a bid to increase further our ever expanding knowledge of these ancient creatures.

Where can a Paleontologist expect to work?
As a Paleontologist, you can expect to often work outdoors, hopefully digging in areas that have many fossils. You may also work in science laboratories studying fossils and comparing your findings with other paleontologist's findings and discoveries. You may be working in a museum, or in a university.
Paleontology - For Kids Aged 7 to 9 Years
I like this book, not because it details what a child needs to do in order to become a paleontologist, but because it covers the study of Prehistoric Life in a way that the young reader with a existing interest in the subject will find it satisfies their budding interest and expands their growing knowledge.
With quick facts highlighted bold and every page containing photographs, this book describes how dinosaur and plant finds are dated and the tools you would use to unearth these discoveries.

How much does a Paleontologist earn?
As with most occupations, this can vary enormously, but an entry level palaeontologist, just out of school can expect to make around $36,000 annually. The average salary for paleontologists is reputed to be $67,000 per year with the high-end salary being about $133,310 per year.
Dinosaur Discovery - For Kids Aged 7 to 10 Years
Aimed at the slightly older child, this book teaches its reader about dinosaur body structure and anatomy, and how it is that the paleontologist understand body structure. Uniquely, the author has incorporated lots of experiments, with well written instructions and picture steps, that engage the reader and enables them to learn through practical activities from learning how a dinosaur used its tail for balance to dinosaur bone strength. A cool and exciting mix of information and hands on activities.

Have you ever considered a career as a paleontologist?
Fossils And History - Paleontology For Kids
From the First Grade Science Workbook series.
I like this book because it a simply put introduction to Fossils and Paleontology. Ideal for the child of nursery age. Each page has a attractive picture and a short explanatory description. In my view, not too detailed and not too long - but carefully written with the very young child's attention span in mind. Sure to excite young minds and a great way to engage in reading with your child.

What child has not at some time collected a fossil of the beach. This book will be sure to further their natural curiousity about creatures that lived long ago. It also covers the lives of some of those pioneer dinosaur hunters who pathed the way for the paleontologists of today.
