Reading Recommendation: Vampire and Paranormal Suspense Novels
What's On My Bookshelf: My Favorite Vampire Books and Paranormal Suspense Novels
Bertrand Russell once said, "There are two motives for reading a book; one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it." That quote is certainly true for me. I love to read and I also love to write reviews to let other readers know of my top picks on my reading list.
On this lens you will read about my favorite vampire book series' and my favorite books on my reading list in the paranormal suspense genre.
For my top picks for vampire novels, I have included The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K Hamilton, The Southern Vampire Mysteries (also known as the Sookie Stackhouse novels) by Charlaine Harris, The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, and the Undead (or Queen Betsy) series by MaryJanice Davidson.
I have also included my top picks for the paranormal books. They are The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, and The Hollows (Rachel Morgan) series written by Kim Harrison. I hope that you enjoy reading about your favorite books as well, or that you learn about a new favorite to add to your own reading list.
Books - My Most Prized Possessions
Anyone that knows me also knows that I'm an avid reader. My books of choice... horror and gothic novels - modern day alternate reality stories where the things that go bump in the night are real. I love dark tales featuring vampires, witches, monsters, werewolves, and other magical or supernatural creatures.
Someone asked me recently, "If you house was on fire, what is the one thing that you would save? What is your most prized possession?" Of course, my first priority would be to make sure my family was safe, but as far as possessions, the first thing i would save would be my personal library of books.
I have been collecting my favorite horror, fantasy, and gothic novels since my teen years and I would be heartbroken to lose them. If my house was on fire, and I had time to save them, I would grab the nearest box or laundry basket and toss in as many of my books as I could and drag them outside to safety.
How important are books in your life?
Sookie Stackhouse - Southern Vampire Mysteries
Sookie Stackhouse Novels - The Southern Vampire Mysteries
Charlaine Harris has created a fun and exciting series with the Southern Vampire Mysteries. Sookie Stackhouse is a barmaid in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Vampires have just come out of the closet and announced their existence to the world and Sookie would love nothing better than to meet one. She gets her wish when vampire Bill Compton walks into the bar.
Sookie has a unique ability to read minds of anyone around here and hearing the thoughts of her friends and neighbors is more than a little stressful. And dating seems to be out of the question because she can "hear" exactly what her date is thinking. What a relief to find she cannot read the minds of vampires.
Follow Sookie as she becomes involved in the supernatural world around her, falls in love with a supernatural creature or two, and becomes an asset, and a danger to vampire kind.
Food that walked and talked, that was us. McPeople.— Sookie Stackhouse
The Southern Vampire Mysteries is a fun and fabulous storyline filled with hunky vampires, studly werewolves, and loads of other supernatural creatures. I highly recommend the series to any vampire fan.
Twilight Novels - The Twilight Saga
Stephenie Meyer has created a phenomenon with the Twilight series of books. Meet Bella Swan and Edward Cullen and fall in love with this fantastic story. Bella Swan moves to Forks, WA and meets and falls in love with Edward Cullen.
Then she discovers his secret. Edward is a vampire. As she enters his world, she also discovers she is drawn to it and wants to be a permanent part of his life - forever. But Edward is convinced that he is damned and will not do the same to Bella.
As Bella is enjoying the magic and beauty of Edward's world, she also discovers the danger and peril she is in as a human. Throughout the Twilight storyline Bella must face a bloodthirsty vampire tracker, a angry vampire seeking vengeance for her mate, and even the royalty of vampire kind. How can Edward keep her safe with danger on all sides?
Tell me then... how do you become a vampire?— Bella Swan
The Twilight Saga is a fantastic read and I highly recommend the story. While it is was originally geared for teen readers, it has gained a huge following of adult fans as well.
Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter
Anita Blake Novels - The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series
The Anita Blake novels make up a fabulous vampire series by Laurell K Hamilton. Anita is a vampire hunter and animator. Her main job is to raise the dead. She raises zombies to answer legal questions or for family members to say good-bye.
Anita also helps out the Regional Paranormal Investigation Team by solving crimes on the supernatural persuasion. She is also a legal vampire executioner in the state of Missouri. And she hunts vampires that have gone rouge by hurting humans.
Anita is a strong female character. She always goes armed and she can damn well take care of herself. Reading along as she hunts supernatural bad guys and slays rouge vampires is a real treat.
I spend most of my waking hours confronting and destroying things that I fear.— Anita Blake
Guilty Pleasures - Book 1 of the Anita Blake series
The Anita Blake series is a fun series to read. I highly recommend it. The modern day magical world Laurell K Hamilton has created is fantastic and the ongoing storyline brings lots of reading enjoyment.
Queen Betsy - Undead Series
Queen Betsy Novels - The Undead Series
The Undead series is one of my favorites on my reading list because of the lightheartedness of the story. MaryJanice Davidson brings fun and humor to a usually dark area of paranormal fiction.
Betsy Taylor is a down on her luck secretary. She also has no prospects for a long term relationship. She is trying to resolve both of those issues when she wakes up dead. Now, she is faced with all sorts of strange creatures thinking she is the Queen of the vampires.
All Betsy wants to do is continue on with her normal life, get a job, and build up her shoe collection. How can Betsy accomplish all this and be the ruler of the undead?
We have souls. Sure we do. Otherwise we'd do bad things all the time. You know, like politicians.— Betsy Taylor
The Undead series is hilarious. Betsy's character is funny and a little dim-witted and will make you laugh out loud. I highly recommend the series for anyone looking for a light and humorous vampire series.
Mercy Thompson Series
Mercy Thompson Novels - The Mercy Thompson Series
Vampires are not the main focus of the Mercy Thompson series, but Patricia Briggs has created a world filled with vampires, werewolves, and the fey. Mercy Thompson is an exciting and intriguing series that includes magic and all manner of supernatural creatures.
Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson is a mechanic and walker - a shape-shifter with the power to change into a coyote at will. She is strong and smart, but she is a small pup compared to the other supernatural creatures around her.
Follow Mercy as she survives attacks from major supernatural bad guys, falls in love with her werewolf neighbor, and manages to extract herself in some sticky situations.
Dance when the moon sings, and don't cry about troubles that haven't yet come.— Mercy Thompson
I very much enjoy the world Patricia Briggs has invented in the Mercy Thompson series. It brings a unique sense of magic and wonder to the paranormal genre. I highly recommend the series to anyone who enjoys a supernatural storyline.
Rachel Morgan - The Hollows Series
Rachel Morgan Novels - The Hollows Series
The Hollows series featuring Rachel Morgan is a truly fantastic set of novels. Author Kim Harrison has given this paranormal storyline a unique twist on the norm. She has made humans the minority in this series with a virus that wiped out a huge chuck of humanity - all with a simple genetic change to a tomato.
Rachel Morgan is a earth witch and a runner (think bounty hunter) for black witches, vampires, and other supernatural creatures. What she lacks in the common sense department, she makes up for with attitude, a lot of luck, and her choice of friends.
When Rachel looses her job and her home in the aftermath of a death threat she moves into a remodeled church, and starts an independent runner service with Ivy Tamwood, a living vampire, and a hot headed pixie named Jenks. Follow Rachel as she bumbles her way into more trouble throughout the storyline and fights to clear her good name.
Death and blood didn’t turn on a vampire. Fear and the chance to take blood did.— Rachel Morgan
I love how Kim Harrison has set up the world and back story for The Hollows series. It is a fascinating reading experience and I highly recommend it.
