Chivs86 Poetry - Village of the Dead

Chivs86 Poetry – Village of the Dead

Imagine...
how it must have been for this man
upon returning to this Inuit land
in Canada,
November 1930
to find that there were no Eskimos

The fishing tribe of the lake Anjikuni
had disappeared off without a trace -

which had this said Fur Trapper amazed
to find everything left in its usual place...

but where did they migrate without

all of those things
they would normally take?

Things they would need
like Hunting Rifles and Parka Coats
for their survival
but they left them behind

why?

What is it that made this group of people
disappear like this off into the night,

out of sight
with their dogs tied up to the trees left to die

why?

What is it what made this group of people
leave a burning pot of stew on the fire?

Why?

what sort of monster could do this?

- Take a whole village full of innocent lives -

Well...
the neighbours say they see strange lights
on the night that supposedly
was around the time!
that this tribe was
last known to be alive
but whatever was found
the Mounties’ denied...

- ever seeing such a shocking sight -

- like there was no scene of the crime -

So It aint really any surprise that
people today have come to theorize that

In the snow they never left no tracks
so somehow -
they must have been space napped!

Idea and Inspiration

Based on the account of fur trapper Joe Labelle who's claim that upon passing by the village of the Anjikuni tribe - a place where he had visited before - to escape the extreme freezing temperatures of the Canadian tundra, he was shocked to discover that everybody there had disappeared. Not only that but every single one of their possessions had been left behind. Important things like their Parka coats, hunting rifles, food, sleighs, kayaks etc.

Stranger still their dogs - possibly just about to be taken out - were found starved to death tied up to trees. Plus it was said that the villages grave yard was found dug up and that human remains were reported missing.

Speculation is that upon the arrival of the RMCP (Mounties) strange lights were witnessed in the sky. Something people from the next village claimed to have seen at the time of the disappearance. Factors that today some people have gone on to suspect as a mass alien abduction.

My idea for writing this though - I thought it was in some parts similar to other poems I've wrote about Alien contact - Starchild Lost - Are You Sirius etc. So basically It was just a story I wanted to put my own spin on.

A very strange story indeed. I wonder if Joe made it up?
