when i was younger

Updated on February 11, 2013

I walked into a dream

I tried to scream

but my voice dropped like marshmallows

churning milky sighs into butter cream skies

had visions of rainbows

four leaf clovers and lies

the stark naked truth

wouldn't let me close my eyes

Saw the light

and called it love

peeked into the shadows

seeing metaphors dancing

the winds of change

blew over

the seasons came over to my side of the pond

Spring came crawling on toddler's hands and band aid knees

crying in the lavender breeze

Summer came shortly after

running with strength

we became friends

and remembered

the rains

We learned of each other

and how grown we've both become

Autumn came gently

with wrinkles in her forehead

wisdom in her footsteps

She was growing cold

and the tears

would not stop

She tried to tell me

I tried to listen

her teeth began chattering

as her hair turned winter

her memory grey

her vision failing

and soon

her mind

became white

I cried that night

as my best friend

passed away

I carried her child

in my arms

for days and weeks

taught her to crawl

how to walk

nurtured her

until she learned to talk

I named her

after her mother,

when she was a child

and I called her

Spring

Surely one of the most outstandingly beautiful poems I've run across. I cannot quite finds words to describe its effect, but it involved 'goosebumps' up and down my legs. Your imagery & mastery of language are singular and lovely, Eric!

Thanks for sharing. - I'm going up to cast votes up and across.

Such a lovely heart felt poem here, I love the ending where he or she names the child "Spring". Nicely written and very passionate about the love of a good friend. Thanks for sharing, thumbs up and out.

Gypsy, thank you! I've always loved how the seasons seem to be a metaphor for birth, adulthood, middle age, then finally death... only to be reborn again :)
