Start with The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935 by two men, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, who considered themselves to be hopeless alcoholics. Both of them had spent years desperately searching for a cure for their alcoholism. By the time they met and came to the conclusion that their condition could only be cured by a complete change in the way they thought and behaved, they were both on the verge of losing everything.

Not everyone succeeds with the AA program. In fact, their own statistics suggest that about three-quarters of the people who join AA drop out in the first few years. In addition, the sad truth is that the majority of alcoholics are unwilling to even try this program, which means only a small number of alcoholics are ever able to get sober and stay sober. Nonetheless, the program has managed to help millions of people find sobriety and improve the quality of their lives by following the 12 Steps of the AA Program.

The name Alcoholics Anonymous was derived from the original title of "The Big Book of Alcoholic's Anonymous." When the founders originally wrote down the steps they took to overcome their alcoholism, they called their book "Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism." It seems incomprehensible to realize that even in those early years they realized that the demand for information about the program was so great that they would need to publish a book in order for them to share their experience with the other people who were suffering throughout the United States and, eventually, the world. The book has been revised several times, although core chapters remain exactly as they were originally written by Bill W. and Dr. Bob.

"The Big Book" can be purchased at most AA meetings. In addition, it is possible to purchase both new and used copies of the book online. Sadly, the used copies often mean that someone was unable to stick with the program and decided to sell their books online through Amazon or other sites. My hope is that others can take advantage of these low-cost books and use them to have a better outcome.

Many people have also purchased low cost Alcoholics Anonymous literature online in order to give these books to others who cannot afford to buy their own. If you, or someone you know, needs the help, sending them one of these books might start them on the path to their own recovery.

One other reason that people sometimes purchase an Alcoholic's Anonymous book online is because they know they have a problem, but they do not feel they are ready to attend a meeting. Some people begin their path to sobriety by reading AA literature at home, in privacy. Hopefully, they will eventually attend a meeting, because that is where they will find the help they need in order to stay sober.

What Happens at an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting?

Many people know they have a drinking problem, but they are uncomfortable about the idea of going to an AA meeting. If the prospect really frightens you, call information and get the phone number to the local AA office in your area. They will give you meeting options and can sometimes find someone who will meet you outside the meeting to help you feel more comfortable when you walk in. You may also be able to find this information on your computer.

Whether you go alone or with someone else, no one will expect you to talk at the meeting unless you want to tell others your experience with alcoholism. The other members of AA will ask you your first name, only. If it is a closed meeting, they will ask if you have a desire to stop drinking, which is the only requirement to become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. You do not have to say you are an alcoholic. You only have to say that you would like to stop drinking.

They will pass a basket for donations at some point during the meeting. Most meetings only ask the attendees to donate a dollar or two.

During your first few meetings, you may simply want to sit and listen. You may also want to visit several different meetings to see if there is one where you like the format better.

Get to know people. An important part of AA is finding friends who are also committed to staying sober. It is much easier to stay sober if you can watch a sporting event, have a backyard barbecue, or simply have dinner before a meeting with other people in the program.

Surrounding yourself with sober members of Alcoholics Anonymous is an important part of the program. The more you socialize with other AA members, the easier it will be to stay sober.
