Why should we read

Updated on February 11, 2013

Why Read?

In this world that is now filled with media like internet, movies, TV and video games. We see less and less people reading. Most of the books are also adapted into movie or TV shows so some people may even come to ask themselves, well why should I read. This is what I set out to explain in this page, the reason why reading is still important and relevant in this day and age. I truly believe that writing is man's greatest invention and I hope I can convince you that reading is important with the following text.

About This Page

Why should we read

This page is separated into 3 sections. The first one is where I expose a few statistic about the literacy rate around the world. I show these because before caring about why we should read we have to check whether or not a majority of the world population can read. The second section is the main one and is where I talk about why we should read. I expend on the educational part of reading and on the fun part of it too. The last section is about what should we read because it's one thing knowing why reading is important, but it's another thing to find something to read.

A Few Stats

Literacy Stats - From The UN Human Development Report 2007/2008

Those stats are from 2007 and 2008 so we can assume that they are still relevant today. As you can all see, a majority of countries have a good literacy rate. Only a few places have a literacy rate that's under 60%.

Now we could argue a long time about the true definition of literacy so let's just go with a large one and say that literacy is the ability to read and write. I will, however, say that a lot of people that are considered literate just know how to read easy and daily life stuff and would not be able to read an entire book and understand it.

So most of the world know how to read, but we don't see a lot of people reading in our daily life. Rare are those who would rather choose a journal over the TV news. So if people don't read a lot what are they doing instead with their day. Let's check that out in the section below.

Instead Of Reading

Why should we read

So what are most people doing instead of reading. Well here are a few popular activities:

- Watching TV. Now our days it is not rare to see up to 2 or 3 TV for one household. While there are words in TV shows, I doubt this can really be qualified as a good reading material.

- Surf on the internet, yeah last year the number of internet user reached 2 billion, getting crowded around here. Well this is already a little better because the Internet involve a lot of interesting text, but the thing is that a lot of people don't read them or care about it.

And a bunch of other interactive activities like playing video games, watching movies and more.

Now let's get this right, I'm not saying any of those activities are bad, quite on the contrary I actually do all of those, I'm just saying that we should also integrate a little time to read each day in our schedule.

Why Read?

Why Read

Why should we read

It would be easy just saying that reading is important and not really give any reason as to why people should read.

Of course there are hundreds of reasons for reading and we're going to check a few of those reasons together. I will develop all of this into 2 main section, one that talk about the educational purpose of reading and the other one that talks about all the fun that you can get by reading.

Reading Will Make You Smarter?

Parents, Read To Your Children

Why should we read

This is where it all starts, reading to your child every night like a lot of parent does is quite a good hobby. Of course it's good for the kid because this way he or she can learn to communicate faster and will learn lots of stuff. Also, there is a chance, while it's not 100% sure, that your kids will enjoy reading more once they're grown up if you were reading to them when they were children, take for example my little sister, I use to read a lot to her when she was young and now she is always reading books for fun.

Reading can also deepen the bonds between the parent and the child and it's always nice to pass a little time alone with your kids.

But reading to children can also benefit the parents. No doubt that with children in the house and your work too, you got none to little time to read. So take this opportunity that your child is giving you and read a little something together. Some parents don't even like reading and once they start reading for their kids they find out that's its fun and enjoy it more. So parents, give it a shot and read to your children, doesn't need to be hours, just about 20m every day and it will be plenty.

A Few Books Your Kid Might Enjoy - Why should we read

Learn To Read So You Can Read To Learn

Did I Just Learned Something ?

Knowledge and Culture

Now let me use the word of author Tomie dePaola and say this: Reading is important because if you can read you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything. Could not have said it in a better way. By learning to read and keep on reading you open yourself to a humongous sea of knowledge. Everything you wish to know, you will be able to learn it just by opening a book or doing a little research.

Reading all kinds of stuff will of course help raise your knowledge and general culture. This is great because knowledge and culture is always useful, you often hear people say that they know a bunch of useless stuff, but no knowledge is useless and the more you know the better. It will help you in your daily life, when you are looking for a job and sometime, just knowing stuff is fun. So go ahead and fill your head with all the interesting stuff you can read, over time you will become a walking encyclopedia and all this just by reading a little bit every day.

Learn More By Reading

School and Vocabulary

I was saying earlier that parent should read to their children, well this proves to be even more important when the kid start going to school. Student who read a lot often have better grades than those who don't.

One of the reasons for that is that by reading a lot, people learn a bunch of things that are often useful in school and works of all kind. They also have a better understanding of the text they are given in school because they already have experience in reading different type of text.

You will also raise you're vocabulary level a lot by reading books. By reading you learn lots of word, therefore expending your vocabulary and you also tend to make fewer and less errors when you write a text. It does not mean that you automatically become a supper corrector, but you will probably make less mistakes and have better marks than someone who never or rarely read.

So of course parents can see the importance of this because they want their child to have good grades, but it's also important for adult, after all we write nearly every day and whether it's in work or in daily life, the less mistake you make the better it is.

It's Fun !

Why should we read

Imagination

Reading will also make you travel and use your imagination in ways you never imagined. By reading a book you can transport yourself to the other side of the world or to a fantastic universe full of strange people.

Now of course you can do that by watching a movie too. But here is where reading is better than just watching in my opinion. If you watch a movie or TV show, it's a passive activity meaning you just sit there and receive all the information. In some movie or shows you even turn your brain off and just enjoy what they are showing you without thinking. Reading on the other hand is an active activity, you are involved mentally when you read. You need to concentrate in order to understand what you are reading. But the best thing about reading is that unlike TV or Movie, you often don't have images and sound which means that all of this is yours to create. When you read you can imagine what the world is like, what the character look like or what is voice might be. I find this way more entertaining than just watching and receiving information because when I read I am really a part of the story by creating all those things with my imagination. We all do this, which is why when a movie about the book comes out and the characters don't look like what we imagined, we all are a little disappointed.

Reading is a nice way to relax, to experience lots of emotions and discovers stuff. Picture it, you, siting in a calm place, with a book in your hand and just losing yourself to the world that is described in those pages. Isn't it fun, I guarantee you if you try it you will love it.

Why should we read

Meet People

It's often believed that reading is something that you can only do alone and that ''bookworm'' are solitary being who spend their days between the pages of a book instead of looking at the real world.

Well this is totally false. The fact that you like to read does not mean you will end up being some kind of anti social person. Of course like I said before it can deepen the bonds of your family if you are reading to your children. Reading can also bring people together. Just by going to your local library you can meet lots of people with the same hobby as you. You can also form a book club with your friend so you all share your though about a certain book or author.

Also by gaining knowledge and culture with all those books, you will surely expend the number of things you can talk about. So you will have more interesting conversation with your friends or with strangers and it might even help you meet someone.

While reading is something that you will probably do alone, it does not mean you have to cut yourself from the world because of it, far from that, reading offer you a whole new world of things to do and talk about with other people.

A Few Videos About Why Reading Is Important - Why should we read

What Should I Read ?

A Good Old Book

What Should I Read

Reading Book!

Now that we agree that reading is something important, what should we read. Well why not start with a book. Books are probably one of the medium where you will find the most diversity. There's book about nearly everything you could think of. Whatever the subject of your interest is you will find a book dedicated to it.

The other thing that is good about a book is that you can carry it around everywhere you go and read it when you want to. While something like a computer is a bit harder to walk around with and you need internet to use it to its full capacity, books don't have that kind of restriction which make them the perfect medium if you want to read something.

What Should I Read

You've been reading this page for the last few minutes. So of course books are not the only place where you can read. Now our days we got internet, which is probably the largest source of information out there (while all of it might not be true, it's still interesting).

We also have all kinds of different reading mediums like, comic books, magazines, newspaper, eBook and so on. So you got choice to pick from for your reading and no excuse because reading always have something to satisfy everybody.

I've always loved to be diverse in my time reading books . It started out with wildlife books , then in to medical health encyclopedias , and now , I can read over 20 books a year , and i'm only 18 . Reading has allowed me to have a different perspective of how and why I find things interesting . I'd been called a Bookworm before . . . I love being a bookworm ! Why else should I read ?

I am 15. I love to read a lot. I can imagine what the people and characters look like, as well as the events. I'm writing a book myself. When it comes to certain books, people read them, weather on a kindle, or laptop, reading is good. Technology is making a less smarter. I won't let it do that to me. I don't care what my friends or anyone says. Thanks for the lens.

Your article is well written. It's good to be able to articulate 'why' it's a good thing to read. And you've explained it really well. Like one of the earlier commentors mentioned, some people might read only when they need to, but I think many people should have at least one reason to consider reading.

I have met a lot of highly educated people who tell me they only read when they have too. It's mainly engineers that do this in my circles of friends. Of course, not all engineers are like that.

I love reading a great book. Especially a great fantasy novel. I can sit back, go at my own pace, and let my imagination paint the picture the words are describing to me. Always a lot of fun! =D

This is a good lens, thank you. I'm a 7th grade reading teacher, and I'm constantly working against T.V. and video games. However, I think texting just might be my worst enemy; those kids are constantly attached to those phones, even though they're not supposed to have them in school. I'm a Tolkien fan too. In fact, that's what my first lens is about! You might like my blog too - you can find a link through my lens if you're interested. Thanks again.
