Goodbye To Good bye !

Updated on April 15, 2011

Goodbye to good bye !

There was a time when people greeted each other 'good bye' while parting. Goodbye, actually an acronym for 'God Be With You', says: may you be safe in the protection of the Almighty till we are away. Deep believers that they were, and warm hearts that they had, wishing 'good bye' came naturally to them.

But now that good happenings are conspicuous by their absence, and people are either too busy or disinterested to wish each other well, they cut short 'good bye' to bye and trimmed 'good morning to 'morning'. The hand shake greeting 'hello' soon abridged into a casual hand  wave saying 'hii' (As short as it can get).

And as the greetings became smaller, so did human hearts and the warmth in there. The word 'Hi' in Hindi is in fact a cry of pain. Seeing everyone greet each other "hi....hi...". "Hmmm...Nothing describes our times better."

Cool! I didn't know what "good bye" stood for. Now that I do, I'll be skipping the "bye" business and sticking with "good bye."

So very true and I know I'm guilty of making short-cuts in my greetings as well. Thanks for making me think about it, I'm going to watch what I say more.

Come to think of it, I too don't say goodbye much anymore. Most times I say to my friends see you later.

Will is right, we sometimes say things like 'it's okay' or 'no problem' when someone says thank you.

Yes. The article really finds it point. It is such a sad world we live in today. I remember how different things were just 20 years ago. And when I think of the stories I've heard from my parents and grandparents, well, it's makes me long for a time long ago. I just hope it's not too late to turn things around. I know it's not likely to happen, but if we don't try we have no one to blame but ourselves, right? Enjoy this. Voted up!

Good points. Another common courtesy that is almost gone is "you're welcome". Now we answer a 'thank you' with another 'thank you'.

Interesting views but True. With time crunch, people are taking short-cuts for everything!

I think you have a point. We spend too little time on little things that go a very long way.
