365 Writing Prompts for Creative Writing Inspiration

Updated on August 30, 2014

Get inspired! Start writing!

Write something every day.
Write something every day. | Source

Practice writing sessions - how to use these prompts

Daily writing practice helps you hone your writing skills. It doesn't take long. Write for five, ten, fifteen minutes - whatever feels right to you.

Daily practice writing prompts are for quick inspiration. You can write flash fiction, prose, poetry, or non-fiction - whatever you're drawn to. Switch around and try different things if you like; your practice writing is for your eyes only!

Of course, if you're inspired to write something that turns out so well you want to have it published, that's fine too.

Don't be distressed if your writing isn't perfect, or if it seems pointless. That's just part of daily writing practice. Try something new the next day, keep writing, and have fun.

I love using this Moleskine notebook for creative writing or journaling. It also would make a great writer's notebook for collecting creative writing ideas and inspirations. The lines are close together so it encourages smaller writing... a good thing for me as I tend to write too large in other notebooks. This one has an elastic band to keep it closed, and a ribbon to mark your place. There's a pocket inside the back cover to hide treasures you pick up along the way. Hmmmm... mine contains an all-day pass for Rockin' the Klamath!

My Favorite Pens For Art and Creative Writing

Sakura 50075 16-Piece Pigma Micron 05 Assorted Colors Cube Collection Ink Pen Set
Sakura 50075 16-Piece Pigma Micron 05 Assorted Colors Cube Collection Ink Pen Set
I always buy these Sakura Micron art pens for writing. They are perfect for writing in notebooks, including my Moleskine journal. They do not bleed through. I even use the yellow pen in my Bible and there's no bleed-through on that (I don't use other colors in my Bible.) For years I would write on only one side of a page in my practice writing notebooks, but with these Sakura Micron pens, there's no need to waste half the writing space because both sides are usable without bleed-through. I honestly can't say enough nice things about these pens. The colors are bright... some cheery, some sedated. There are a couple of black pens in this box but 14 are different colors... including a pretty bright blue and three shades of green. I always buy this box because the savings are palpable. The last time I made a pen purchase I paid less than $1.50 per pen but... I know the price changes up and down. Divide the total cost of the box by 16, and you'll know the cost per pen. The list price is $2.89 per pen so if the cost per pen is less than that, you're getting a good deal.

Hi Linda! Thanks for the writer's block- saving prompts! I bookmarked them fast! Better to have a writer's block solution ready and on hand and not need it than to be left twiddling my fingers wasting time not getting any writing done. Appreciate it immensely.

I have more ideas than I'll ever be able to write about.... but I love a good writer's prompt to stretch my imagination. Usually I write flash fiction with these prompts. I find that to be so much fun... aiming for 500 words or less.

That's quite a list you compiled. I'm one of the lucky ones; I don't believe I've ever had writer's block. As soon as I figure out how to stretch my days to include a few more hours, I'll be all set. :)

I really like these writing prompts. I tend not to use them but I'm glad I did. I started in December and when I finished the month, I felt like writing original stuff again. Ideas just sparked. Thanks for such wonderful lists.

To be honest, I've come across a lot of lists for writing prompts on the internet and in books. However, this is definitely one of the more well-compiled prompts for every day of the year. Kudos! Most of these prompts certainly seem more inspiring than others I've seen.
