10 Ideas for Using the Niche at Home
What to do with the home niche?
Usually when a person chooses a new home, he or she pays attention to the location, exposure, size and functionality of the house or flat. The owner doesn't spot a niche in one of the walls until the whole family moves in the new home. And then the wondering starts - what to do with this niche? If you are in the same situation, I suggest you take a look at the following 10 ideas for finding a purpose for your niche.
1. Relaxation Area
Depending on the size of the niche, you can create a cosy relaxation area. Put a bench with soft upholstery, cover it with decorative pillows, hang a beautiful painting and place several flower pots. If there is enough space, you can even put some of your favourite books there as well. If the nook is not near a window, you can install a lamp, which will ensure enough light for hours and hours of reading. Another great idea is to keep a box with knitting tools underneath the bench, which you can reach any time you want to relax while enjoying your hobby.
2. Home Office
More and more people are starting to work from home. You can use the niche to create a comfortable home office. Paint it in colours, which will charge you with good energy and mood. Install a panel, which can be used instead of a desk, and several shelves as well. You can arrange your documents on them and they will be the ideal place for keeping pens, sticky notes, photos, etc. Finish the home office with a soft tiny carpet for your feet and a trash bin in one of the corners.
3. Craft Nook
If the niche is big enough, you can turn it into a craft nook. You can hide it behind a colourful curtain, which will reveal shelves covered with different boxes, full of threads, beads in all sizes, buttons, ribbons, colourful paper, pencils – all the things your hobby requires. On one of the walls you can hang a cork board, where you will pin various creative ideas and inspiration photos.
4. Laundry Room
In case the niche in your home can be connected with the water pipes, you should use it as a laundry room. Place the washing machine inside it and install several shelves above it. There you can keep the iron, the ironing board and different washing detergents. It's a good suggestion to hide the niche with a sliding door.
5. Bags and Shoes Storage
The dream of every woman is to have enough space for all her bags and shoes. The niche in the wall is the ideal place for this purpose. You can either install shelves and arrange your shoes on them or you can keep them in boxes. For your convenience, I suggest you label each box in order to know where every pair is located and find it easily, when needed. You can store the bags on vertical hangers, or on shelves as well. If it's possible to hide the niche with a door, you can keep your belts or other accessories on the back side of the door.
6. Home Library
The unexpected niche can also turn into a home library, which hosts your favourite collection of books. The only thing you need to do is find a shelf, which will fit in the niche and then arrange your books on top of it. If you want to make your home library more interesting, you can find some very useful ideas here.
7. Memory Gallery
Sometimes the niche can be too tiny to fit a separate nook or premise, but this doesn't mean you can't make a good use of it. Paint it in a calming colour, such as light blue, and hang several framed photos in different sizes. Turn the niche into a gallery of memories and you will always smile when you look at it and see the photos from an unforgettable trip or event.
8. Wine Bottles Storage
If you don't have a special place for keeping your wine collection, then the niche is perfect for that. Put a cabinet inside, big enough for the wine bottles. The more extravagant the cabinet, the better. Cover it with a lovely tablecloth and put a vase with flowers on top of it. The final addition for the wine nook can be several glasses and books, dedicated to wine production and wine sorts. If you want to create even a bigger storage place for your wine collection, you can read some great ideas here.
9. Storage for Various Items
In every home you can find items that are kind of useless, but people still keep them, because they have a sentimental value. If you don't have a garage, an attic or a cellar you can utilize the niche as a storage place. Put shelves or a big cabinet in it, which will be able to fit all of your items. But have in mind that these objects will gather a lot of dust and will need regular cleaning.
10. Part of the Home Décor
If the niche at your home is too small, you can simply integrate it in the rest of the interior. You can hang a beautiful painting or a clock on its central wall, in case the niche is located in the living room. If it's in the kitchen, then store your spices there. In the children's room the niche will be the ideal home for toys and books. A niche in the hallway can be decorated with a mirror and creative key holder.
