Everyone needs a get-away whether it's a Summer home hide-away, a weekend stay at a hotel, or just holding up in your own home for a spa weekend and not answering the phone. For those of you who have Summer homes I know you treasure your time there. For those of you who are thinking about purchasing or building a Summer home go for the gold and just do it. I have some good friends who own a Summer home on a lake and I like getting invited to relax there. The name of their Summer home is Wits End. To be exact my friends kids inadvertently came up with the name because their mom always says, "I'm at my wits end," so the kids decided that would be the name of the family's Summer home. I think Summer homes should be at the beach or nestled away between some foliage, hence a log cabin hide-away.

When I used to go skiing each year I stayed in cabins with cute names and/or phrases like Due Duck Inn, Snowdrift, Mountain Holla, etc. When I go on vacation it's interesting to hear the names of the lodges, cabins, huts, hotels, inns, or homes. I often wonder who names these places and how do they end up with those names. After talking to an innkeeper I was informed that places are named for various reasons and some just don't come off the top of someone's head, and sometimes they do. He said places can be named for the following reasons:

  • For a person
  • For a pet
  • For a hobby
  • For a location
  • For a song
  • From a movie
  • For an award
  • For a book title

Hi Husky1970, I have not visited Martha's Vineyard, but have heard so much about it and would love to go there. Thanks for loving the Hub.

You have made some great suggestions. Your hub is very interesting and relevant to the area of Martha's Vineyard known as the campground. The gingerbread cottages there were built in the mid 1800's and bear many interesting names such as Lullabye, BrOakUs, Serenity, Nevadun, Hartsease, etc. A great place to visit. Quiet and charming! Loved this hub. Thanks.
