4000 Years of Mad Apple
Growing up my grandmother cooked a delicious, naked fruit. I could see how the flames would turn it from purple to almost black. Peeled, cut, and mixed with fresh ground beef and tomato sauce. Eggplant was ready over a cup of white rice.
Today, my first eggplant is hanging from a small branch, almost too small for the fruit.
Tracing back its origins in the Indian subcontinent, this fruit sometimes confused with a vegetable, has a long history and many names. In Europe is known as “aubergine”. It also goes by brinjal, melongene, and guinea squash. Known as the mad apple in northern Europe because it was said that consuming the fruit could drive people to insanity.
