5 Plants That Will Thrive In Your Bathroom

Updated on April 24, 2020

Introduction

A lot of people presume that caring for a plant in the bathroom is a demanding task. Although far from the truth, you cannot fault anyone for thinking so. Most plants grow best in environments with abundant light, water, nutrients, moderate temperatures and sufficient space.

If all these conditions are fully put into consideration, then it may seem practically impossible to have any plant inside our homes let alone our bathrooms, yet people somehow make it work. The trick is finding a plant that best suits your environment and that is exactly how we are going to pick out our bathroom plants. So, let’s jump in.

1. Snake plant (Sansevieria)

The snake plant is the best way to kick start your journey to a tropical utopia. Bathrooms are generally low light and high humidity environments and these plants thrive in such conditions. They are easy to grow, require little maintenance and their large leaf surface area allow them to absorb pollutants more efficiently. Snake plants come in several varieties that leaves you spoilt for choice. Another great feature of these plants is that they take less space making them ideal for those with smaller bathrooms.

2. Dieffenbachia

Popularly known as the Dumb Cane, this is another tropical plant that develops well in low-light settings and humid environments. However, it needs a little more care as compared to the snake plant. You will be required to consistently water the plant and also keep it fairly warm during the winter. The Dumb Cane has stunning green, yellow and white coloured leaves which helps brighten up your bathroom.

3. Orchids

Orchids are quite appealing and it is easy for someone to get lost in their beauty. Do not be that person. You need to look beyond the beauty. In our case, we are looking for ones that enjoy humidity and require less sunlight. Given that Orchids are tropical plants, this shouldn’t be difficult to find. Moth orchids, Jewel orchids and paphiopedilums are some examples that thrive in medium to low light conditions. These plants have an edge over the rest mostly because of their long-lasting blooms. It’s a reward of a well-cared Orchid worth being proud of.

4. Peace Lilly

Peace lilies are magnificent plants. They flourish in low light environments and require little maintenance. As their caretaker, you should always ensure that the soil is kept moist but also be careful not to overwater them. Peace lilies are very effective in filtering impurities because of their large green leaves. If your pet constantly follows you to the bathroom, then you might want to reconsider getting this plant as it is toxic to them. Alternatively, you could pick a spot in the bathroom beyond the reach of your pets.

5. Ferns

Ferns are common plants in the tropical forests and enjoy the high humidity and low light there. These plants grow at the base of the forest where they are shielded from direct sunlight. This makes them ideal plants to have in your bathroom. They are relatively easy to grow and have numerous diverse species. The Asparagus and the Boston ferns are some great picks for your bathroom.

Thank you for this information. Ive been hesitant to use plants in the bathroom because I did not know which ones would thrive.
