3 ways that we clutter our wardrobe.

Updated on October 2, 2012

Ohh, that dress is so pretty, hmm I will definitely find another use for this shirt, let me keep this pants until I lose weight... Sounds familiar? These are just some of the conversations that go through our minds whenever we are in need of a wardrobe overhaul. Before we know it, we end up not throwing out anything at all and our wardrobe looks as cluttered as ever. In this article, I will be sharing with you 3 habits that clutter your wardrobe.

The heap of mess in my room

1. Disorganized Wardrobe

When your wardrobe is disorganized, you may end up forgetting what you already have in your collection. You might think you only have 3 white shirts but in fact you have 5 of them in the different corners of your cabinet. By being unconscious about what you have, you will end up purchasing more of the same type of garment, resulting in unnecessary clutter.

Tip: Start organizing your wardrobe today by grouping your items into category. It could be - workwear, date-wear, casual wear and within these categories, sort the items by color. Going through your collection once will give you a good idea of what you have and what you do not.

2. Hoarding

This is one of the greatest reasons (*erherm* excuses) for cluttering our wardrobe. We tell ourselves that there will always be a use for this particular article of clothing some time in the future or if it is too small, we will lose weight to fit into it. Before you know it, we end up having a ton of clothes in the wardrobe that we never use. What is more demoralizing than to be faced with a wardrobe of clothes that are too small for our frames? You need to learn to let go and stop wasting precious wardrobe real estate. Somebody will have a better use for your old clothes.

Tip: Sieve out clothes that you have not worn in years. Sort out the ones that no longer fit. Take out the ones that are out of style. Donate it to someone who could use them or sell them at a flea market.

3. Buying pieces that don't match many things

Sometimes we chance upon something unique and we absolutely have to add it into our collection. There is nothing wrong with that as we can better express our personality with these pieces. However, it may become a clutter problem if we have too many of these unique pieces that do not match anything else in the wardrobe. We end up not being able to wear them often in fear of being spotted with the same outfit repeatedly. These pieces hence end up being worn only once or twice every year and takes up precious wardrobe space.

Tip: To make your wardrobe more efficient, avoid buying pieces that cannot match more than 3 other pieces in your collection. ie, you need to be able to at least create 3 other looks with the piece that you want to buy. This way, it encourages you to use more of the items in your wardrobe and makes you want to use them more often.

Goodbye wardrobe clutter!

These are just 3 of the many habits that can lead to unnecessary wardrobe clutter. I hope that this article has shared with you some insights and tips on reducing that wardrobe clutter of yours. Having a neat, organized and efficient wardrobe will improve our lives in many ways that we do not realize until we do so. Think along the lines of saving money, saving time to select your outfit everyday, having more clothing options to choose from.. and the list goes on. So, what are waiting for? Embark on your de-cluttering today!
